Dear Councilman Caprioglio:
Thank you for your service to our community as the District 4 representative on
the Fresno City Council. Fresno State is pleased to anchor the north end of the
council- district and to partner *with the City of Fresno on many important
initiatives, such as the Building Neighborhood Capacity Program in the El Dorado
Park neighborhood,
l am writing to express my support for the proposed Bus Rapid Transit: system. 1
understand this;.item'will be considered by the. City Council on Thursday. l
appreciate that there are many issues to evalpade when considering the BRT
proposal, but please know the university community stands in support of the
system moving forward. We support the improved mobility that the BRT system
will provide along the busiest.public transit corridors in-the City. We also support
the improvements to air quality that the BRT-system would provide over time. We
are especially supportive of BRT connecting to Shaw Avenue and the Fresno State
campus and understand that the faster we implement BP%T along the initial
corridors, the faster we will, be able to extend it along Shaw Avenue.
l urge your support of the initial components of the 13RT system and my
colleagues and T commit to working closely with your office.to accelerate the
extension of the system along Shaw Avenue to. Fresno State.
Please call me at any time if you have any questions or if would like to discuss this
matter further. l look, forward to working closely with you on this and other issues
that are important to our•commuaity,
Sincerely,

The Honorable Ashley Swearengin
Mayor, City of Fresno
2600 Fresno Street
Fresno,CA 93721
Dear Mayor Swearengin:
The California Department of Transportation(Caltrans)recognizes and supports the concept and
implementation of Bus Rapid Transit(BRT)as a potentially cost-effective strategy to maximize
the movement of people, not just vehicles. BRT has the potential to reduce traveler delay,
increase capacity, foster energy savings, and enhance safety not just on the State Highway
System, but on conventional streets as well.Features such as these could potentially result in
increased ridership thus reducing vehicle trips thus reducing Greenhouse Gas consistent with the
requirements of Senate Bill 375. Reduced trips on local and State facilities could also have a
mitigating affect as inevitable new development occurs.
It is Caltrans policy to work closely with local jurisdictions, local transportation planning
agencies, transit operators, and other stakeholder to innovate, implement, and advocate BRT
systems. Caltrans looks forward to working with the City on its new Bus Rapid Transit system.
Sincerely,
SHARRI BENDER EHLERT
