Defining Characteristics: There are four detÌnirrg characteristics of a CSW Site that nrust be present in order to qualify lbl membership in the CSW Network: i. CISWs are in low-income neiglrborhoods: Each ¡rrograrn maintains a penìlanenî public space that is walking distance to low-inconre lrorues and schools, and is dense with science exhibits as well as tools and materials. Llser-generated content and lclcally hired educatot's f'oster familiarity and agerìcy for participants. ii. CSW plogranrs are operr-ended and studcnt-driven: As rnuch as possible, students choose what they want to do and how tlrey'rc going to do it. what questions they rvant 1o ask and how they'le going to answer theln, iii. CSWs are open-door': fiee drop-in hours ale schedr¡led to minitnize barriers lbr' participating youth ancl ftrmilies, nrrd a valiety of other programs provide nrultiple ently points in tinre and space: afterschool, during the day, on field trips to the CSW, and via rnobile programs at rural locations. iv. CSWs strive to satulate theil cornnrunity witlr scienoe: working with schools. oonrrnunity- based olganizations, housing projects, libraries, rnunicipalities and parks as needed to transfolrn a conrmunity's experience of scietrce education. 3. Programs: Each CSW Site aclopts its own combination of the f'ollowing plograrns (Drop-in is thc. only lequiled prograrn), or invents new progranrs that nteet the requilernents of the mission, values, and foru' defìning chal'acteristics: i. Drop-in,' each CSW site nrLrst scheclule open dlop-in hours at a pe lnlanent rvorkshop location in which rnembels of the public ars fì'ee to come anclgo. and to engage in activities of their own choosing. ii. After School: students enlollecl in an aftel school progmnr paltioipate in CSW activities - this can lrappen at the CSW site, a school, or other conrrnurrity location suclr as a Boys and Girls club or a library iii. Field Trip:t ktt lhe,çil¿/; schools bring students to the CSW during the school day, This can be a singular event or an ongoing unit of trips. iv. Field Trips (to outsitle loccilions)i CSW stal'f'olganize a trip, trarìspolting students to a location of'scientifìc interest and leadirrg activities thele (aqualiurn, science rnuseunl, beaclr, carnping, digging for fossils, rlatule center. etc.) v. Classrr¡ont Visils (ctl lhe l;chools); CSW staff go to schools dLrring the school day, 'l'his can bc n singulal event or arr ongoing Lrnit of trips, vi. Science Clctss (sile based); a school brings a class of students legulally to the CSW duling the school day and science class is conducted there - usually this prograrn is ongoing throughout the schoolyear, and activities at the CSW constitute palt of the coulsewolk. vii. The CSW educator's priurary role is to help children to make sense of the natural and hulnan-constrttctecl wolld arou¡rd them. CSW stalf should be representative of the cotnmttttity served as ¡ C. muclì as possible - there is strong research evidence that role tnodels closc to stuclents' lives aLe inost effective at errgaging kicls in STEM. CSW sites stt'ive to have att inclusive balance among staffmentbers ofgettder, race, languages spoken. agc, and educational background, Learning Philosophy: i. lnquiry - learning in the CSW is dliven by participants' crrriosifl, with the emphasis o¡'science arrd engineering practices such as asking questions, gathering evidellce, and working thlough reasoning and design iteration to answer those questiotts. Science is bist learned by doing science, and conceptual undelstanding begins wìtlt real experiences with rcal materials and phenomena. ii. Tirrker.ing and Making - participants have access to t'aw matel'ials when makittg attcl tinkering, and can construct theil own components of pro.iects, The projects built in the CSW are all diffbrent - CSW staff rnenrbers avoid assentbly-lirte activities b)/ encouraging participants to vat'y and itet'ate their ct'eatiolls, iii. Student Initiative - parlicipants desigrr and execute CSW projects attd experirnents, Staff'nlembers help participants to clevelop their own interests arld ideas, ancl enco¡tâge the colnlnunity to bring in pro.iects, questicttts, ancl experintettts. CSW stafT mernbers avoid completing key steps for students by encottraging independent and confide¡t ¡se of tools and nlatelials, Participants have easy aocess to tools and rnaterials with minirnal aelult interyention, þlxhibits, specitnens, and plo.iect nlodels al,e out where studerlts cau manipulate thern - nothirrg is behincl glass, and nothing is off-linlits (except occasional pl'esence of tools listecl fbr stafï use only, above), iv. Learrring Coals - the goals of the CSW are to impact participants' eltgagetnetlt, self'- identityaskills. and choices in STEM, and to f'oster those learning dispositions partictilaLly suppofted by STEM education, but which are ilr fàct applicable to all iearnirrg i¡ a child's lil'e, These inclucle pelsistence, conficlence. creativity. collaboratioll, cotnmunication, and clitical thinkittg.
