Garcia, Engineer Review Level: 3 Administrative Support: Leslie Oulashian, Management Analyst II Section 308.002 Page 1 of 12 PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to provide Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department) members an outline on the use and operation of the Garmin 64ST GPS. APPLICATION The Garmin 64ST GPS is utilized by FFD to determine location, navigation, tracking, and mapping. OPERATIONAL POLICY This section intentionally left blank. Installing AA Batteries: i. Turn the D-ring counter-clockwise, and pull up to remove the cover. ii. Insert two AA batteries, observing the polarity. iii. Replace the battery cover, and turn the D-ring clockwise. iv. Hold the power button. v. Select “Setup > System > AA Battery Type”. vi. Select “Alkaline”, “Lithium”, “Traditional NiMH”, or “Pre- charged NiMH”. b. Maximizing Battery Life: Reduce the backlight brightness. Reduce the backlight timeout. Use battery save mode. o Select “Setup > Display > Battery Save > On”. Decrease map drawing speed. Turn off “GLONASS” or “GALILEO”. c. Turning on the 64ST: Hold the power button. d. Keys: Section 308.002 Page 5 of 12 FIND Select to open the search menu MARK Select to save your current location as a waypoint QUIT Select to cancel or return to the previous menu or page Select to scroll through the main pages. ENTER MENU PAGE Select or to select menu options and move the map cursor. IN OUT e. Acquiring Satellite Signal: It may take up to 60 seconds to acquire satellite signals. i. Go outdoors to an open area. ii. If necessary, turn on the device. iii. Wait while the device searches for satellites. Section 308.002 Page 6 of 12 a) “?” flashes while device determines the users location. b) “” displays the satellite signal strength. f. Using the Main Pages: The information needed to operate this device is found on the main menu, map, compass, trip odometer, and elevation plot pages. g. Opening the Main Menu: The main menu provides access to the tools and setup screens for waypoints, activities, routes, and more. See the following link for more information: Addl. Main Menu tools on page 8. h. Calibrating the Compass: Before calibrating the electronic compass, the user must be outdoors, away from objects which influence magnetic fields (i.e., cars, buildings, power lines). The 64ST has a 3 axis compass. Calibrate the compass after moving long distances, experiencing temperature changes, or changing the batteries. i. From the compass select “Menu”. ii. Select “Calibrate Compass>Start”. iii. Follow the on screen instructions. i. Waypoints, Routes and Tracks: Waypoints are locations to record and store in the device. Waypoints can mark where the user is, where the user is going, or where the user has been. The user can add details about the location, such as name, elevation, and depth. A GPX file which contains waypoints by transferring files to the device can be added. Refer to Page 12 in the owner’s manual. Section 308.002 Page 7 of 12 i. Creating a Waypoint: 1) Select “Mark”. 2) If necessary, select a field to make changes to the waypoint. 3) Select “Done”. ii. Projecting a Waypoint: 1) Select “Waypoint Manager”. 2) Select a Waypoint. 3) Select “Menu > Project Waypoint”. 4) Enter the bearing, and select “Done”. 5) Select a unit of measure. 6) Enter distance, and select “Done”. 7) Select “Save”. iii. Navigating to a Waypoint: 1) Select “Find > Waypoints”. 2) Select a waypoint. 3) Select “Go”. iv. Editing a Waypoint: 1) Select “Waypoint Manager”. 2) Select a waypoint. 3) Select an item to edit, such as the name. 4) Enter new information, select “Go”. v. Deleting a Waypoint: 1) Select “Waypoint Manager”. Section 308.002 Page 8 of 12 2) Select a way point. 3) Select “Menu>Delete”. j. Routes: A route is a sequence of waypoints or locations which lead the user to the user’s final destination. k. Creating a Route: i. Select “Route Planner > Create Route > Select “First Point”. ii. Select a category. iii. Select the first point in the route. iv. Select “Use”. v. Select “Select Next Point” to add additional points to the route. vi. Select “Quit” to save the route. l. Editing the name of a route: i. Select “Route Planner”. ii. Select a route. iii. Select “Change Name”. iv. Enter the new name. m. Editing a Route: i. Select “Route Planner”. ii. Select a route. iii. Select “Edit Route”. iv. Select a point. v. Select an option: Section 308.002 Page 9 of 12 1) To view the point on the map, select “Review”. 2) To change the order of the points on the route, select “Move Up” or “Move Down”. 3) To insert an additional point on the route, select “Insert”. The additional point is inserted before the point the user is editing. 4) To remove the point from the route, Select “Remove”. vi. Select “Quit” to save the route. 2. Tracks: A track is a record of the user’s path. The track log contains information about points along the recorded path, including time, location, and elevation for each point. a. Tracks settings: i. Track Log: Turns track recording on or off. ii. Record Method: Sets a track recording method. Auto records the tracks at a variable rate to create an optimum representation of the user’s tracks. iii. Recording Interval: Sets a track log recording rate. Records point more frequently. iv. Auto Archive: Sets an automatic archive method to organize the user’s tracks. v. Color: Changes the color of the track line on the map. b. Viewing the Current Track: i. Select “Track Manager” > Current Track. ii. Select an option: 1) To show current track on map, select “View Map”. 2) To show elevation plot for current track, select “Elevation Plot”. Section 308.002 Page 10 of 12 c. Clearing the Current Track: i. Select “Track Manager > Current Track>Clear Current Track”. d. Deleting a Track: i. Select “Track Manager”. ii. Select a track. iii. Select “Delete”. e. Navigate a Saved Track: i. Select “Find>Tracks”. ii. Select a saved track. iii. Select “Go”. f. Setting a Proximity Alarm: Proximity alarms alert the user when the user is within a specified range of a particular location. i. Select “Proximity Alarms>Create Alarm”. ii. Select a category. iii. Select a location. iv. Select “use”. v. Enter a radius. When entering an area with a proximity alarm, the device sounds a tone. g. Blue tooth Connected Features: Refer to the User’s Manual Page 7. Wipe the device using a cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution. b. Wipe it dry. c. Allow to completely dry. INFORMATION 1. Most common used Position Format and Map Datum. Degrees, decimal minutes are the most common position format at incidents. WGS84 is the most common map datum.
