PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to provide Fresno Fire Department (FFD or
Department) members an outline on the care and use of the STIHL MS 462 C-M R
chain saw.
APPLICATION
The STIHL MS 462 C-M R chain saw is one of the models carried on FFD Brush
engines for use on vegetation fires.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, all Department members shall wear
appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to include, chaps (when used
during a vegetation fire), proper eye protection, hearing protection, helmet, gloves,
jacket, pants, and foot protection.
Members shall not cut any materials with body “in line” with the guide bar. This may
cause injury from the saw/debris or if kickback occurs.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
The STIHL MS 462 C-M R chain saw should be carried with the brake engaged and
the guide bar pointing rearward.
PROCESS
1. Operating the STIHL MS 462 C-M R Chain Saw:

a. Prior to starting the STIHL MS 462 C-M R chain saw, members
should:
i. Ensure secure and firm footing.
ii. Engage the chain brake.
iii. Depress the decompression valve.
b. Start the saw:
i. Cold Start:
1) Depress and hold the trigger lock out (1) and
squeeze and hold the throttle trigger (2) while
moving the master control lever (3) to the start
position. (See Figure 1.)

ii. Warm Start:
1) The master control lever (3) will automatically be
in the run position if the engine is shut off. (See
Figure 2.)

2) Pull the starter rope grip quickly and allow
the rope to rewind several times until the
engine runs.
3) Do not pull the starter rope to full length.
b. Shut off the Saw:
i. Release the throttle trigger.
ii. Move the master control lever (3) to the stop position.
(See Figure 3.)

2. Inspection Checks:
a. Daily Checks:
i. Check the fuel level. Add pre-mix fuel, if necessary.
ii. Check the saw guide bar oil level. Add oil, if necessary.
iii. Check the chain condition, tension, and proper direction
of travel.
iv. Make a visual check of the chain saw for loose fasteners
and/or covers.
v. Inspect the engine case for cracks and/or leaks.
vi. Inspect the fuel tank and guide bar oil tank for cracks
and/or leaks.
b. Weekly Checks:
i. Perform daily checks as listed.
ii. Start the engine and check for smooth operation at all
speeds. Let the saw run for at least one to two minutes
until the engine is warm.
Caution: Do not run the chain saw at full rpm without
load for more than a few seconds or
damage to the engine may occur.
iii. Check to see if the saw guide bar is getting sufficient oil.
iv. Place the chain saw on a firm surface. While the engine
is at an idle, engage the chain brake. If the chain brake
does not operate properly, place the chain saw out of
service and have it repaired.
1) Notify the battalion chief through established
procedures.
v. After the chain saw has cooled down, check the chain
tension and re-adjust, if necessary.
vi. Inspect the starter rope for fraying, cuts, and security in
the handle.

vii. Refill fuel and guide bar oil, if necessary.
c. Monthly Checks:
i. Perform daily and weekly checks, as listed.
ii. Set the choke. Inspect/clean air filter.
3. Fuel:
The STIHL MS 462 C-M R chain saw utilizes a 2-cycle engine that requires a
50:1 fuel-oil mix.
The 50:1 TruFuel is to be used to refuel the chain saw. The product comes
premixed and is ordered from supply.
a. When fueling:
i. Allow the engine to cool before refueling.
ii. Perform operations in a well-ventilated outdoor area on
bare ground.
iii. Remove fuel caps slowly.
1) A fuel geyser can occur when the engine is hot and
the tank is opened while under pressure. It can
also occur in hot environments, even when the
engine has not been running.
iv. Add fuel, as necessary.
v. Wipe up any spilled fuel before starting the chain saw.
vi. Start the engine at least ten feet away from the fueling
area.
4. Bar Oil:
Use the chain saw bar oil supplied.
The oil control will be set at maximum oiling.
a. Shut off the engine.
b. Engage the chain brake.

c. To adjust the flow:
i. Turn clockwise to increase.
ii. Turn counter-clockwise to reduce.
5. Guide Bar and Chain:
a. Removing the guide bar and Chain (See Figure 4):
i. Shut off the engine.
ii. Unscrew the nuts (1).
iii. Remove the sprocket cover (2).
iv. Turn the side chain tensioner (3) counter clockwise until
the tensioning gear (4) sits flush against the housing.
v. Remove the guide bar and chain.

b. Mounting the guide bar and chain (See Figure 5):
i. Position the chain in the groove of the guide bar, starting
at the tip.
ii. Ensure the cutters in the groove on the top side of the
guide bar face the tip of the bar.
iii. Point the guide bar tip away from the chain sprocket (7).

iv. Place the chain around the chain sprocket.
v. Slide the bar (6) over the collar screws (5).
vi. Fit the pin tensioning gear in the hole (8) of the guide bar.
vii. Disengage the chain brake. Direct the drive links into the
groove of the guide bar while turning the side tensioner
clockwise until it stops.

c. Tensioning the chain (See Figure 6):
i. Fit the sprocket cover on the saw with nuts loose (1).
ii. Lift the guide bar up.
iii. Turn the side tensioner (2) clockwise to tighten the chain.
1) A properly adjusted chain will sit closely against
the underside of the guide bar but can still be
pulled easily along the bar by hand. Always wear
gloves when handling the chain.
2) If the chain cannot be moved along the bar it is too
tight.
iv. Once the chain is properly tensioned, tighten the nuts
clockwise until the sprocket cover is firmly attached.
NOTE: Release tension on the chain after finishing
work. The chain contracts as it cools and

can cause damage to the drive shaft and
bearings.

d. Chain:
Wood cutting chain.
GAUGE 0.063".
3/8" Pitch.
Chain out of service criteria.
Any tie straps are broken or missing.
Excessively dull chain.
o If the chips from cutting are fine, more like saw
dust than wood chips, the chain is likely dull and
needs to be sharpened/replaced.
e. Guide bar
25 inch bar.
Flip the guide bar after each sharpening and each time
the chain is changed. This will help reduce uneven wear.
There is no top or bottom of the bar. It may be used in
either orientation.

Periodically clean the oil inlet hole, oil outlet channel, and
bar groove.
Periodically remove any metal burrs that develop along
the guide bar with a flat file.
Replace the guide bar if the burrs cannot be filed or if the
guide bar becomes damaged.
f. Cleaning the air filter:
i. Shut the engine off.
ii. Engage the chain brake.
iii. Open the shroud locks by turning ¼ turn counter
clockwise with the combination wrench.
iv. Remove the shroud.
v. Clean the area around the air filter with a damp cloth or
soft brush.
vi. Rotate the air filter a ¼ turn counter-clockwise by hand.
vii. Remove the air filter.
viii. Knock out dust and debris from the filter.
ix. If the air filter is damaged, replace it.
x. Spray the outside of the air filter with warm soapy water.
xi. Rinse the filter from the inside out under warm running
water.
xii. Allow the air filter to air dry.
xiii. After the air filter has dried thoroughly, push it into place
by hand and rotate it clockwise until it engages in
position. The “Stihl” logo should be horizontal.
xiv. Place the shroud into position.

xv. Tighten the shroud locks until an audible click is heard.
6. Stihl M-Tronic Engine Management System:
The Stihl M-Tronic engine management system electronically controls
the ignition timing and fuel metering in any operating condition,
factoring in altitude and fuel quality. This system provides optimum
performance, whether just beginning to work or resuming after a break.
Manual carburetor adjustments are no longer required. The carburetor
does not have adjusting screws. Refer to page 47 in the STIHL MS-
462 C-M Instruction Manual for calibrating the chain saw.
7. Seasonal Operations:
a. Winter:
The carburetor may ice up when the saw is used at ambient
temperatures below 50 degrees. To prevent icing, the shutter
must be converted to allow warm air from around the engine to
heat the carburetor. Use at higher temperatures may cause the
engine to overheat. (See Figures 7 and 8.)
i. Shut off the engine.
ii. Engage the chain brake.
iii. Open the shroud locks by turning ¼ turn counter
clockwise with the combination wrench.
iv. Remove the shroud.
v. Pull out the shutter (3).
vi. Re-insert the shutter with the winter symbol points toward
the chain saw (4).
vii. Push the shutter into the slot until it stops.
viii. Place the shroud in position.
ix. Tighten the shroud locks until you hear an audible click.

b. Summer:
The shutter must be set to summer mode when working in
temperatures above 50 degrees F.
i. Shut the engine off.
ii. Engage the chain brake.
iii. Open the shroud locks.
iv. Remove the shroud.
v. Pull out the shutter.
vi. Re-insert the shutter with the “summer” symbol points
toward the chain saw (4). (See Figure 9.)
vii. Push the shutter into the slot until it stops.

viii. Place the shroud in position.
ix. Tighten the shroud locks.

DEFINITIONS
In-line: Position of body when cutting. Stand to the left of the cut,
outside of the cutting plane.
Kickback: The sudden, upward motion of a chain saw’s guide bar, which is
one of the most common causes of chain saw accidents.
Fuel Geyser: The rapid, high energy, expulsion of fuel. It occurs when fuel in
a closed system becomes superheated and pressurizes.
