SECTION 306.018 STOKES LITTER WHEELS
PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to explain the use and operation of Stokes litter
wheels carried by the Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department).
APPLICATION
Stokes litter wheels provide an additional level of safety for the patient and rescuer
and are an excellent transport solution when moving a patient across uneven terrain.

PROCESS
1. Cascade Rescue Terra Tamer:
a) Prepare for use:
i. Remove the locking pins holding the fork to the saddle.
ii. Remove the fork from the saddle and set aside.
iii. Position the saddle on the bottom of the litter under the
center of the patient mass.
iv. Release the ratchet mechanisms, pull the straps down
toward the litter top rail and attach the hooks.

v. Pull the red tab horizontally to equally tension the straps.
Tighten with the ratchet mechanism. Do not over-
tension the straps. Excessive tension can damage your
stokes litter.
b) Installation:
i. Three or four attendant wheel installation:
1. Attendants 1 and 2 (3) raise litter and patient
while attendant 3 (4) inserts fork tubes into the
saddle receivers.
2. Attendant 3 (4) inserts locking pins and attaches
brake handle to litter top rail.
ii. Two attendant wheel installation:
1. Attendant 1 raises the head of the litter.
2. Attendant 2 inserts locking pins and attaches brake
handle to litter top rail.
2. Using the Russ Anderson Stokes Litter Wheel:
a) Prepare for use:
i. Loosen the tension knob located just above the wheel.
b) Installation:
i. Three or Four attendant wheel installation:
1. Attendants 1 and 2 (3) raise the litter and patient
while attendant 3 (4) places the frame straddling the
top rail of the stokes litter.
2. Attendant 3 (4) tightens the tension knob.
ii. Two attendant wheel installation:
i. Attendant 1 raises the head of the litter.

ii. Attendant 2 places the frame straddling the top rail
of the stokes litter.
iii. Attendant 2 tightens the tension knob.
