PURPOSE
To guide members in the development of their career to the rank of Firefighter
Specialist.

Members in the rank of Firefighter.

PROCESS
Experience:
Currently working as a permanent employe e in the Fresno Fire Department (Fresno
Municipal Code (FMC) Chapter 3 – Personnel, Section 3-219, Promotional
Examinations). Any questions concerning employment status should be directed to
the City of Fresno (City) Personnel Services Department.
Three (3) years of continuous service as a firefighter with the City’s Fire Department.
Firefighter specialist experience can be gained in various ways, including acting and
participation in station activities.

All interested candidates are encouraged to complete the acting sign-offs, skills
certification and request to be placed on the acting list.
Officers are encouraged to provide in-house training opportunities for interested
members. Firefighter specialist functions include, but are not limited to, operating
apparatus, pumping, aerial ladder operations, inspection and maintenance of
apparatus, tools and equipment. Interested members are encouraged to take the
opportunity to become familiar with these functions.
Education:
Incident Command System 200
CSFM Apparatus Driver/Operator Pump or Driver Operator 1A and 1B (after one (1)
year of service as a firefighter specialist, one can apply for CSFM Apparatus
Driver/Operator Pump certificate).
FFD acting engineer (Administrative Manual, Section 101.004, Acting Policy).
CSFM Firefighter II
Possession of a valid Class B California driver's license, without air brake restriction,
and with tank endorsement or possession of a valid Class C California driver's
license with a firefighter endorsement.
Firefighter specialists assigned to Arson Investigations must successfully complete a
polygraph test, psychological examination and an extensive background
investigation prior to appointment.
Applicants must provide a copy of the required certification(s), license(s) and sign-
offs to the Department’s Training Division for verification.

DEFINITIONS
1. Permanent employee: Member who was appointed from an eligible list
and has satisfactorily completed the probationary period. Time
counted in a permanently appointed position begins upon completion
of the probationary period.
