OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Members must be especially vigilant when operating at incidents along the roadway
and or freeway. Visibility, access, and driver reaction times must be considered.
The company officer (or designated member) is the designated safety officer for all
roadway incidents. The safety officer monitors traffic activity, ensures the use of
proper PPE by all members (including themselves), and corrects and notifies the
incident commander of safety problems BEFORE personnel are placed in a position
where they may be struck by passing traffic.
The wearing of safety vests, and stop/slow traffic signs can be used in conjunction
with each other in traffic situations. The signs can also be used in conjunction with
orange traffic cones.
