SECTION 206.001h FLAG ETIQUETTE
PURPOSE
To establish standard practices for the display and care of the American flag and other
flags approved by the Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department).
APPLICATION
All members are to utilize this procedure as a guideline for the display and care of
flags used by the Department.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
Department etiquette of the Flag of the United States of America will be, as far as
applicable, in accordance with the Flag Code adopted by the National Conference,
Washington D.C.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Company officers are responsible for the proper display and respectful care of the
flag.
The Flag of the United States of America is to be displayed at the top of the staff of all
Department quarters from 0730 to 1630 hours each day of the week, weather
permitting. Where 24-hour illumination is provided, the Flag of the United States of
America can remain displayed after hours, weather permitting.
Other display of the flag at quarters is to be regulated by specific instruction from the
Communications Center or instructions delegated by the Fire Chief.
Whenever the flag is to be carried in Department formation, a color guard is to be
provided.
When not in use, the flag should be folded and properly stored.

Upon becoming unfit for service, either through wear or exposure, the flag should be
replaced and sent to the supply section for proper disposal.
A crew member designated by the company officer should hoist and/or lower the flag.
The designated crew member should be fully dressed in the uniform of the day.
All other members present on the occasion of hoisting or lowering the Flag should pay
their respects in a recognized manner.
