HomeMy WebLinkAbout305.002h - Kenwood TK-5730 Mobile Radio TRAINING AND EQUIPMENT MANUAL COMMUNICATIONS COMPONENTS 305.002h KENWOOD TK-5730 MOBILE RADIO EFFECTIVE: MARCH 2018 Current Revision Date: 6/26/19 Next Revision Date: 6/26/24 Authors Name/Rank: Justin Hill, Captain Review Level: 1 Administrative Support: Leslie Oulashian, Management Analyst II PURPOSE The purpose of this policy is to familiarize Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department) members with the components, features, use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the Kenwood TK-5730 mobile radio. APPLICATION The Kenwood TK-5730 is programmed similar to the TK-5710 and TK-790 with one exception, the TK-5730 has a zone programmed with VOTE SCAN capabilities. The Kenwood TK-5730 portable radio is primarily used with BC and Command Staff Vehicles. Features of the radio include: 128 channels. Alpha-numeric display. 50 watts power output. 32 repeater tones available. One (1) direct access channel button (home channel). The 128 channels are divided into groups designed by the Communications Team to meet the Department needs. The radio is capable of selecting one of the 32 Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System (CTCSS) for accessing different repeaters. Press [] to switch the transceiver ON. Note: The following screen appears if the Custom Start-up Screen has not been set. 2. Press [] again to switch the transceiver OFF. Adjusting the Volume 1. Press the key programmed as [Volume Up] to increase the volume. Press the key programmed as [Volume Down] to decrease the volume. Section 305.002h Page 2 of 9 Selecting a Zone and Channel 1. Select the desired zone using the keys programmed as [Zone Up / Zone Down]. Each zone contains a group of channels. 2. Select the desired channel using the keys programmed as [Channel Up / Channel Down]. Each channel is programmed with settings for transmitting and receiving. Note: The transceiver may have names programmed for zones and channels. The zone and channel names can contain up to 16 and 14 characters respectively. While selecting a zone, the zone name will appear above the channel name. Transmitting 1. Select the desired zone and channel using the keys programmed as [Zone Up / Zone Down] and [Channel Up / Channel Down]. 2. Press the PTT switch and speak into the microphone. Release the PTT switch to receive. Note: The LED indicator light is red while transmitting and green while receiving a signal. This indicator can also be disabled by the dealer. 3. Hold the microphone approximately 1.5 inches (3 cm to 4 cm) from the user’s mouth for best sound quality at the receiving station Receiving 1. Select the desired zone and channel. If signaling has been programmed on the selected channel, a call will be heard only if the received signal matches the transceiver settings. Section 305.002h Page 3 of 9 Vote Scan Capabilities 1. Zone 1 – FFD Home (VOTE SCAN capabilities): Within this zone, all menu functions are lost (i.e., Scan, Add/Delete channels in a scan group, Command channel, OST function). Members will see the channels which are enabled with VOTE SCAN as they will toggle back and forth between duplex and simplex. For example, Fire 1 will flash between Fire 1(duplex) and Vote 1(simplex) depending on which frequency is stronger. 2. Zone 2 - State Wide: These are all of the major state agencies (i.e., Cal Fire Units). 3. Zone 3 - USFS: This is the United States Forest Service Net. 4. Zone 4 - FFD Home: This is the same as Zone 1, with the exception of VOTE SCAN. Note: Within this zone, members will not have VOTE SCAN. This is the zone to scan and/or build a command group. Operator Selectable Tone (OST) 1. Press the square key (item “i” in the diagram) for two seconds and the screen will appear showing the available tones. 2. Use the Channel Up / Down (item “e” in the diagram) to toggle between the tones. 3. Once the desired tone has been highlighted, key up the mic to select the tone and save it. Note: The tones programmed into the radio do not coincide with the current 32 tones identified by FIRESCOPE of California. Members will need to know the tone number. Example, Tone 1 is 110.9 Hz. However, the first tone on the TK-5730 is 67.0 Hz. The following is a list of the current tones. This will be fixed in the future. Following is a summary of the functions for operating the radio: Operation Panel Section 305.002h Page 5 of 9 RADIO KEYS DESCRIPTION a Power Button Press to switch the transceiver ON or OFF. b Zone (Group) / Toggle through the different Zones 1- 4. c Display See below for Display Area and Indicator information. d Unassigned / Left / Right Menu toggle. e Channel Up/Down / Secondary Channel UP / DOWN. f DIR CH Fire 1 Direct dial buttons to Channel: Fire 1, Zone 1. g Unassigned This is an emergency button, but is disabled. h DIR CH Fire 2 Direct dial buttons to Channel: Fire 2, Zone 1. i DIR CH Fire 3 Direct dial buttons to Channel: Fire 3, Zone 1. j Channel Up/Down Channel selector. k Volume Volume control. l Unassigned Unassigned. m Squelch Adjust the squelch level. Press and hold screen, this displays the squelch level. Can be adjusted from 0-9. Radio should be left at 5. Select 5 and OK to save. Section 305.002h Page 6 of 9 n Square – OST To enable, press and hold. A list of OST will appear and member can scroll with the up and down arrows. Once the desired tone is found, push the PTT and the channel will be saved with the Tone. o Triangle–TAC Zone The triangle is the Command Zone feature. To enable, find desired channel and press once. A “T” will appear in the top tool bar and the channel will be added to the Command Zone. p Scan Add/Del This feature will Add/Delete channels to be Scanned. There will be a symbol when a channel is enabled. q Scan This enables and disables the scan feature. Main Area Display information of the transceiver i.e., channel number and Zone number. Key Guide Area Displays the functions for [ ], [ ], [ ], and [ ] keys. Function Indicator Indicator Description Displays the signal strength. The channel is using high transmit power. The channel is using medium transmit power. The channel is using low transmit power. In Digital mode (Digital Channel). In Analog mode (Analog Channel). In Digital mode (Mixed Channel). In Analog mode (Mixed Channel). Green: Non-priority Scan or Voting / Site Roaming is in progress. Blinks when the scan is paused. Red: Priority Scan is in progress. Blinks when the scan is paused. Indicates Priority channel 1 or Priority Monitor ID 1. Indicates Priority channel 2 or Priority Monitor ID 2. Indicates Priority Monitor ID 3. Indicates Priority Monitor ID 4. The current channel is added to the scanning sequence. The current Zone is added to the Multi-Zone scanning sequence. Section 305.002h Page 8 of 9 The Talk Around function is activated. The Monitor or Squelch Off is activated. The External Speaker is activated. Both Speakers (Internal + External) are activated. The Tactical Zone is activated. AUX A is activated. AUX B is activated. AUX C is activated. The Operator Selectable Tone (OST) function is activated.
