SECTION 405.004 DISPOSITION OF WATERFLOW SIGNALS FOR FIRE
SPRINKLER SYSTEMS
PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to clarify the Fresno Fire Department’s (FFD or
Department) requirements related to the disposition of waterflow signals for fire
sprinkler systems.
APPLICATION
This policy applies to all fire sprinkler systems within the City of Fresno (COF) and
contract service areas.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
Requirements
Based upon the need for uniformity in application across the Department’s diverse
service delivery area, and after careful deliberation, the Department has determined
that the timing of the receipt and retransmission of a fire sprinkler system waterflow
signals through a listed, fire alarm control unit, through disposition of that signal by an
approved monitoring service shall be as follows:
1. Water Flow-Switch Activation – 90 seconds
(Local audible device (i.e. Bell) must ring @ trip)
2. Signal transmission from the signal transmission means to the receiving
communications means – 90 seconds
3. Central Station receipt of transmission and subsequent notification to FFD
dispatch:
Signal description: Water Flow
Time: 90 seconds

Total Time: 4 MINUTES, 30 SECONDS

INFORMATION
As noted in the California Fire Code (CFC), the fire code official has the authority to
formulate policies they deem necessary based upon local conditions related to all fire
sprinkler and fire alarm systems and applications.
National Fire Protection Association 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code,
describes signal transmissions and their associated timelines as critical activities in
the proper performance of fire sprinkler systems, and as such, signal transmissions
and their associated timelines must be in accordance with this policy to ensure
satisfactory performance.
