Beal, Fire Prevention Engineer Current Revision Date: 11/4/2024 Section 405.004 Next Revision (1) Date: 11/4/2027 Page 1 of 2 Fresno City Fire Department 400 Fire Prevention Manual SECTION 405.004 DISPOSITION OF WATERFLOW SIGNALS FOR FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS PURPOSE The purpose of this policy is to clarify the Fresno Fire Department’s (FFD or Department) requirements related to the disposition of waterflow signals for fire sprinkler systems. APPLICATION This policy applies to all fire sprinkler systems within the City of Fresno (COF) and contract service areas. OPERATIONAL POLICY Requirements Based upon the need for uniformity in application across the Department’s diverse service delivery area, and after careful deliberation, the Department has determined that the timing of the receipt and retransmission of a fire sprinkler system waterflow signals through a listed, fire alarm control unit, through disposition of that signal by an approved monitoring service shall be as follows: 1. Water Flow-Switch Activation – 90 seconds (Local audible device (i.e. Bell) must ring @ trip) 2. Signal transmission from the signal transmission means to the receiving communications means – 90 seconds 3. Central Station receipt of transmission and subsequent notification to FFD dispatch: Signal description: Water Flow Time: 90 seconds Effective Date: January 2009 Justin H. INFORMATION As noted in the California Fire Code (CFC), the fire code official has the authority to formulate policies they deem necessary based upon local conditions related to all fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems and applications. National Fire Protection Association 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, describes signal transmissions and their associated timelines as critical activities in the proper performance of fire sprinkler systems, and as such, signal transmissions and their associated timelines must be in accordance with this policy to ensure satisfactory performance.
