HomeMy WebLinkAbout203.011a - Physical Fitness Program Fresno City Fire Department 200 Standard Operating Procedures Manual SECTION 203.011a PHYSICAL FITNESS PROGRAM PURPOSE A physical fitness program is necessary to assure a physically fit work force, capable of performing the rigorous and physically demanding firefighting duties. Firefighting often involves rapidly changing situations that call for sudden, unpredictable stress and arduous physical exertion. To maintain optimal readiness for meeting these situations, the Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department) has implemented a physical fitness program. APPLICATION The physical fitness policy is intended to enhance the physical and mental capabilities of suppression members. OPERATIONAL POLICY The physical fitness policy will require members to participate in the program each duty day. The Department will offer annual fitness and medical evaluations through a contracted professional. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE The physical fitness program will benefit each member by: 1. Increasing strength, endurance, flexibility, and coordination which correlate to a reduction of injuries. 2. Building cardiovascular strength leading to increased overall health and longevity. PROCESS In-service physical exercise is to be conducted before 1000 hours or after 1600 hours each duty day. Company officers have the latitude to adjust the physical exercise time based on daily activities. A program of aerobic and strength building activities consisting of warm up, weightlifting, cardiovascular, and cool down is recommended. The exercise program is to include multiple activities exercising both upper and lower body areas. The physical fitness evaluation is to be conducted annually. The annual evaluation is to be conducted by an outside designated provider covering weight, blood pressure, heart recovery rate, flexibility, strength, body measurements, and blood panels. The physical fitness program results are to be monitored by the Health and Wellness Officer in conjunction with the Health and Wellness Committee. The Health and Wellness Officer is to report the success of the program annually to the Fire Chief.
