APPLICATION This policy applies to all fire sprinkler system installations, including required and voluntary systems. OPERATIONAL POLICY As noted in the latest edition of the California Fire Code (CFC) the Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department) is permitted to specify requirements for all fire sprinkler system bells. REQUIREMENTS Based upon the need for uniformity in application across the Department’s diverse service delivery area, the Department has determined that each fire sprinkler system bell is required to be as follows: 1. All sprinkler system bells must be installed to face the street the property (or building) is addressed to. 2. With prior FFD approval, a sprinkler system bell may be installed on the side of the building where the main entrance for the general public is located. Note: At the sole discretion of the Fire Marshal (or designee) a fire sprinkler system bell may be positioned to an approved, adjacent location which provides an equivalent level of notification when it is not practical to face the bell as noted above. An economic condition or aesthetic concern is not considered a valid basis for a request to modify a fire sprinkler bell location. Effective Date: January 2016 Justin H. Beal, Fire Prevention Engineer Current Revision Date: 11/15/2023 Section 405.029 Next Revision (3) Date: 11/15/2026 Page 2 of 2 Developers may obtain a permit from the applicable jurisdiction should they desire to readdress the building for these concerns. 3. Bell specifications are to be as noted below: A. Bells for all Group R installations are required to be 6” or larger. B. Bells for all other occupancy groups must be 10” or larger. Submitted fire sprinkler plans are required to note the location and size of the fire sprinkler system bell. The location of the bell must be in accordance with this policy prior to system final.
