EFFECTIVE: DECEMBER 2018

PURPOSE
Provide instruction on the use of the Bresnan Distributor.
APPLICATION
Bresnan distributors are used to place an effective fire stream at points where
firefighters cannot operate. The most common application of this would be in the
extinguishment of basement or cellar fires. In such an application, the distributor
would generally be placed through a hole cut in the floor above the basement.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
This section intentionally left blank.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Bresnan distributors are primarily used to extinguish basement fires, but can also be
used to assist in silo fires or any fire in densely-packed material within a container
which could be suppressed with copious amounts of water.
The distributor is carried on Engine companies. Each Engine is equipped with either
a 1-1/2-inch or a 2-1/2-inch distributor.
When using the distributor, care should be taken to place the distributor at the
proper height above the floor.
During deployment, a Camcone valve should be attached between the last two (2)
sections of attack line. The use of a Camcone is necessary to provide the fire attack
crew complete control over the distribution of water. Think of it as the bail to a
nozzle. A hose clamp may also be used as needed.

The distributor is placed in the proper position by lowering the distributor through the
opening in the floor until it touches the floor or other obstacles and then withdrawing
the distributor about half way. Continuous lowering and raising of the distributor is
advisable to ensure complete coverage.
PROCESS
1. Remove the Distributor, a Camcone (if not attached to hose), and a
hose strap and place at the desired location.
2. Place any necessary equipment for cutting a hole at the desired
location.
3. Advance one attack line to the distributor.
a. If using a 1 ½” Distributor, up to 300’ of 1 ½” hose or up to 500’
of 1 ¾” hose can be used,
b. If using a 2 ½” Distributor, up to 400’ of 2 ½” hose can be used.
4. Remove the complete nozzle assembly (if attached) and attach the
Distributor.
5. Install the Camcone between the last two sections of attack hose.
6. Charge the hose line and lower the distributor into the opening
simultaneously.
7. The hose strap may be used to help raise and lower the Distributor.

INFORMATION
The 1 ½” Distributors flow 140 GPM @ 100 PSI nozzle pressure. The rated
effective reach is 10’ (20’ diameter from the nozzle). (See Figure 1.)
Figure1
The 2 ½” Distributors flow 495 GPM @ 100 PSI nozzle pressure. The rated
effective reach is 18’ (36’ diameter from the nozzle). (See Figure 2.)
Figure 2
As water flows through the distributor, the distributor rotates. The maximum range is
15 feet in any direction, provided no obstacles are present.
