APPLICATION This section intentionally left blank. OPERATIONAL POLICY The Fresno Fire Department will comply with all state and local policies in accordance with this policy. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE This section intentionally left blank. PROCESS When a needle is found, it is to be disposed of properly using a Sharps Shuttle. 1.Isolate the area where the used needle is found to prevent an exposure. 2.Open the Sharps Shuttle to properly contain the needle. 3.Never pick up a needle with bare ungloved hands, leather gloves are best. Use a pinching type tool such as pliers or tongs, or use a scrapping device such as paper or cardboard to move the needle into the Shuttle. 4.Hold the Shuttle at the base with one gloved hand, maneuvering the needle into the Shuttle gently with the other gloved hand. 5.Close the lid to ensure the needle is contained inside the Shuttle. Immediately dispose of the Sharps Shuttle at an approved sharps disposal site located in front of designated fire stations and at headquarters. 7. Never reopen the container to empty the contents to reuse the Shuttle. 8. Replace the Sharps Shuttle in the medical bag from the station medical supply to ensure one is always available. Sharps Shuttles can be reordered through supply.
