FIRE INDUSTRY BULLETIN 2015-002
SCOPE
New requirements for spare fire sprinkler heads and wrenches in one- and two family
dwellings equipped with fire sprinklers.
PURPOSE
To permit responding fire department staff to return one- and two-family dwelling fire
sprinkler systems to service after a fire sprinkler head has activated.
BACKGROUND
The Department continues to strive to provide more efficient services, and it has been
determined that responding staff may be able to restore a fire sprinkler system to
service, which may cause a smaller inconvenience to a homeowner who has
experienced a sprinkler head activation.
REQUIREMENTS
Beginning January 1, 2016, any contractor installing a fire sprinkler system in a one- or
two-family dwelling shall install spare fire sprinkler head kits. A kit shall contain a
minimum of one spare fire sprinkler head of each type (typically a total of two fire
sprinkler heads) of the same temperature rating and orifice size. The kit shall also
contain a compatible wrench for each type of sprinkler head.
Kits shall be located in a spare head cabinet in either the laundry room closet or in the
garage adjacent to the door leading into the home. No building final shall be granted
until the above noted spare head kit is installed.
This policy is effective January 1, 2016 until revoked.
