HomeMy WebLinkAbout316.020 - Service and Operate Chainsaw Fresno City Fire Department 300 Training and Equipment Manual SECTION 316.020 SERVICE AND OPERATE A CHAINSAW PURPOSE The ability to place a chainsaw quickly, safely, and effectively into service is a critical job skill needed by all Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department) members. APPLICATION Individual performance evolutions (IPEs) are used to document skill level performance. OPERATIONAL POLICY This section intentionally left blank. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE Active members should perform IPEs without any failures in task steps. PROCESS Equipment Needed: One firefighter in full personal protective equipment, one SCBA, and one FFD chainsaw. Task: The member is to perform all safety checks and operate the saw appropriately. Candidate Directive: Perform the daily, weekly, and monthly checks of the chainsaw. Once completed, the member is to operate the saw to complete a cut on the designated objective and upon completion, return the saw to operational status. Check saw for loose fasteners and/or covers, leaks, or cracks. 2. Check fluid levels. 3. Check chain condition, tension, and proper direction of travel. Perform a Weekly Check 1. Perform daily check. 2. Start chainsaw, operate throttle. 3. Verify bar oil operation. 4. Verify chain brake operation. 5. Check starter rope for damage. Perform Monthly Checks 1. Perform daily and weekly checks. 2. Clean the air filter. Operating the Chainsaw 1. Don all personal protective equipment. 2. Verify chain brake on, choke set. 3. Start chainsaw. 4. Safely make appropriate cut. 5. Use chain brake, shut down. Cleaning 1. Remove housing/chain. 2. Thoroughly clean/check saw components. 3. Check chain condition. (Must be replaced if two tips in a row, or five all together, or any tie straps are missing or broken.) 4. Place chain on bar in the correct direction. 5. Reassemble saw. 6. Adjust chain tension correctly.
