PURPOSE
This policy has been established to provide direction to contractors/designers for the
location of required manual fire alarm pull boxes in all occupancies where a building
fire alarm is installed.
APPLICATION
This policy applies to all building fire alarm system installations, including required and
voluntary systems.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
As noted in the latest edition of the California Fire Code (CFC) the Fresno Fire
Department (FFD or Department) is permitted to specify requirements for the location
and number of manual fire alarm pull boxes for all fire alarm system installations.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Based upon the need for uniformity in application across the Department’s diverse
service delivery area, the Department has determined that when a building fire alarm
system is installed, the system must conform to the requirements noted below:
1. In every building where a building fire alarm system is installed, a minimum of
one (1) manual fire alarm pull box must be installed in a location approved by
the Department. Additional manual fire alarm pull boxes may be required at
the discretion of the Fire Marshal (or designee) to facilitate the manual
activation of the building fire alarm based upon system design, system
performance objectives, etc.
