APPLICATION The Smithway and Honda Submersible Pumps are primarily used to extract water from confined or below-grade areas. OPERATIONAL POLICY This section intentionally left blank. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE This section intentionally left blank. PROCESS Smithway Submersible Pump: 1. Connect a length of 1-1/2-inch hose to the discharge side of the pump. If necessary, attach the rope provided and lower or place the pump in the water to be removed, ensuring one of the two strainers provided is always attached. Note: The mushroom strainer allows water removal down to approximately one inch in depth. 2. Place the switch in the "off" position and test the intended power receptacle with the receptacle circuit tester. If the circuit is not grounded or only two-wire receptacles are available, supply power with a department power source. 3. Turn the power switch to the “on” position and begin water removal. Effective Date: October 2007 David Polanco, Engineer Current Revision Date: 9/21/2023 Section 307.002 Next Revision (1) Date: 9/21/2028 Page 2 of 3 Note: The waterproof switch is an “off” and “run” toggle switch containing a fuse and an automatic reset protector. The fuse provides short-circuit protection only. A blown fuse indicates serious electrical difficulty that should be corrected prior to fuse replacement. An automatic reset protector is installed to prevent damage due to overloads such as a locked impeller and requires approximately 30 seconds to reset after shutdown. The power cords should be checked before each use for damage and the three cable gland nuts (one on pump and two on switch) should be checked to ensure they are tight. Honda Submersible Pump (Model WSP73AA): 1. Unclip the float cord and lower the mechanical float switch to just below the strainer ports (the float switch placement is to determine when the pump automatically shuts off). Figures 1 and 2. 2. Select the electrical receptacle to be used and test with a circuit tester. The maximum distance from pump to power source is 100 feet. 3. Plug in the submersible pump. 4. Connect 1 1/2” hose to the discharge on top of the pump. 5. If necessary, attach a rope to the handle and lower the pump into the water to remove it. The pump is designed to pump clean water with suspended solids up to 3/16 of an inch. 6. The pump can automatically shut off, given the mechanical float switch is placed in the proper position. If the pump does not automatically shut off, simply unplug from the power source. If the pump is operated continuously for an extended period in a dry condition or at the lowest level, the motor protector can be activated. Constant repetition of this action can shorten pump service life. INFORMATION The Smithway Submersible Pump is a three-quarter horsepower, 110-volt unit that is self-priming and designed to operate above or below the water surface. The pump’s output varies from 115 GPM at zero feet of head to 20 GPM at 30 feet of head and requires approximately 1,000 watts of power. The Honda Submersible Pump is made of stainless steel with a weight of 27 pounds, measuring 17.2 inches X 8.3 inches. It has a three-quarter horsepower, 115-volt single phase motor that operates at 3600 rpm. It has a semi-open impeller, sealed ball bearing, and has a built-in motor protection with auto reset. It is equipped with a 50-foot power cord and has a performance range of up to 74 GPM and up to 54 feet of head (Figure 3). This pump discharges approximately 1 gallon per second.
