PURPOSE
To define when and to whom the 24-Hour Notice form is to be issued.
APPLICATION
The 24-Hour Notice form is used by both the Fire Suppression and Fire Prevention
Divisions when a hazardous condition exists that needs to be corrected immediately.
The notice is issued to the occupant of the building to have the hazardous condition
corrected within twenty-four (24) hours.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
This section intentionally left blank.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Upon finding a hazardous condition that cannot be corrected immediately, a 24-Hour
notice of correction is to be issued. Conditions that exist where this form may be
used are listed but not limited to the following:
Faulty fire alarm systems. Multiple false alarms within the same day or
repeated over multiple days.
Fire sprinkler systems where deficiencies exist.
Improper construction or damage to the structure where fire spread may
occur.
Exiting issues, blockage, unable to exit the building without some type of

Apparatus access roads blocked.
Storage arrangements that impair manual firefighting operations (i.e., lack of
aisles, unstable piles, etc.).
Any condition that exists that is an immediate danger to the safety of the
occupants, firefighters, structures, or public right of way.
PROCESS
Upon discovery of a hazard requiring the issuance of a 24-Hour notice, the member
may use the two-part pre-printed (duplicate) form or the electronic version from the
policy. If the electronic version is utilized a second copy will be printed to ensure
proper distribution. Each section of the form must be completed.
In the “NOTICE TO COMPLY BY ORDER OF THE FIRE MARSHAL” section the
member will list the violations that need to be corrected (For example: Smoke
detector keeps tripping the fire alarm. Owner/manager will contact fire alarm
contractor to repair the defective smoke detector.).
The manager or responsible party will sign and date the form. If unable to obtain a
signature a return visit to the occupancy to obtain a signature is required. The form
will not be left at the occupancy without the presence of a responsible party.
The re-inspection should be completed the following day, twenty-four (24) hours
after the initial notification by either the same crew or the oncoming crew. When
conducting a re-inspection to ensure correction of the violation, fill out the date,
employee ID number, time in, time out and have the manager/responsible sign the
form once again.
If corrections have been made, route the completed form to the assigned Fire
Prevention Inspector for the station. This will allow for filing and tracking of future
incidents. DO NOT discard this notice.
If the correction has not been made, an additional twenty-four (24) hours to comply
may be granted. If the member deems the violation serious, the appropriate fire
prevention inspector may be notified for follow-up.
Once the violation is corrected and all the applicable portions of the form are
completed, the 24-Hour notice form will be routed to Fire Prevention for data entry
and tracking purposes.
