Proper advancement and application of a progressive hose lay is essential in suppression efforts during vegetation fires. APPLICATION Individual performance evolutions (IPEs) are used to document skill level performance. OPERATIONAL POLICY This section intentionally left blank. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE Active members are to perform IPEs without any failures in task steps. PROCESS Equipment Needed: Two candidates in full wildland firefighting gear, 2 hose clamps, 500 feet of 1-1/2-inch wildland hose, wildland nozzle, and a standard pumping apparatus. Task: Perform a 500 foot; two-person progressive hose lay within 8 minutes. Performance Outcome: Candidates are to make a 500-foot progressive hose lay from a clearly marked “anchor point” and apply a continuous wet line to a simulated fire line. Effective Date: April 2007 Brian Downs, Fire Captain Current Revision Date: 6/15/2023 Section 316.035 Next Revision (1) Date: 6/15/2025 Page 2 of 6 Candidate Directive: “You are to make a two-person 500-foot progressive hose lay from a clearly marked anchor point while applying a continuous wet line. At the midpoint of the evolution, you are to switch positions with the other candidate.” Critical Errors: If the candidate performs any of the following errors, the examination is to be terminated, as it would be a failure of the current test attempt. • Performed an unsafe act which could have resulted in injury to him/her or the public. • Perform an act which did or could have damaged equipment. Appropriately deploy starter hose: • Connect nozzle. • Connect to discharge. 2. Don hose packs and secure equipment. 3. Call for water (nozzle person): • Verify bale is initially closed. • Bleed air. • Adjust pattern. • Start at anchor point. 4. Advance hose, making a continuous wet line: • Alternate nozzle pattern to wet line and knock fire down. • Stop with about 10’ of slack. (Verbalized by hose person) • Knock down fire ahead of hose lay. TIME STARTS 5. Hose Person: • Remove hose from candidate with nozzle’s pack first. • Appropriately deploy 2nd hose completely. • Correctly clamp hose, verbalize. 6. Nozzle Person: • Open nozzle to release pressure. • Remove nozzle and hand female coupling to hose person. • Retrieve male coupling from hose person. • Attach nozzle to hose. • Call for water. 7. Hose Person: • Hand male coupling to nozzle person. • Retrieve female coupling from hose person. • Attach to clamped hose coupling to complete connection. • After a call for water, release hose clamp slowly. 8. Nozzle Person: • Verify bale is initially closed. • Bleed air. • Adjust pattern, if necessary.
