HomeMy WebLinkAbout316.034 - Salvage OperationsEffective Date: January 2010 Michael S’Gro, Firefighter Current Revision Date: 8/25/2022 Section 316.034 Next Revision (1) Date: 8/25/2024 Page 1 of 4 300 Training and Equipment Manual SECTION 316.034 SALVAGE OPERATIONS PURPOSE The purpose of this policy is to provide instructions to Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department) members on salvage operations skills to protect structures and personal property from smoke, heat, and water damage. APPLICATION Individual Performance Evolutions (IPEs) are used to document skill level performance. OPERATIONAL POLICY This section intentionally left blank. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE Active members should perform IPEs without any failures in task steps. PROCESS 1. Equipment Needed: One member in full personal protective equipment, one truck with a full complement of hose and equipment, an appropriate amount of salvage covers, and a simulated fire room with water leaking and exposed furniture. 2. Task: Perform salvage of room and water removal from the interior of a structure. 3. Performance Outcome: Perform salvage and water removal from the interior of a structure using salvage covers, tools, and equipment. Candidate Directive: Demonstrate the ability to perform salvage operations and the ability to remove water in a simulated room. The evolution ends when all equipment is returned to a ready state, and you communicate that the task has been completed. 5. Critical Errors: If the member performs any of the following errors, the evolution is terminated as it would be a failure of the current test attempt. 1. Perform an unsafe act which could result in injury to him/her or the public. 2. Perform an act which did or could have damaged equipment. INFORMATION This section intentionally left blank. Perform size-up of the room to be salvaged to ensure a safe working area. 2. Cluster the furniture and move the room contents away from the water flow, if possible. 3. Remove any pictures/art from the walls and place with clustered furniture. 4. Carry the cover(s) safely and properly. 5. Cover the clustered furniture with the following method: Single firefighters roll method. 6. Once completed, remove the cover, and refold. Form Puddle Catcher/Water Chute 1. Construct one of the following: Puddle Catcher. Water Chute. 2. Place the water chute or the puddle catcher in the correct position to capture water. 3.
