SECTION 316.031 SET UP A PORTABLE MONITOR
PURPOSE
Master stream monitors have the potential for serious injury or death to firefighting
personnel or the public. Proper knowledge of their operation is critical.
APPLICATION
Individual Performance Evolutions (IPEs) are used to document skill level
performance.
OPERATIONAL POLICY

OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Active members should perform IPEs without any failures in task steps.
PROCESS
Equipment Needed:
One candidate in full personal protective equipment, one SCBA, and one engine with
a full complement of hose and equipment.
Task:
Members are to deploy all hose, equipment, and tools necessary to set up a portable
monitor.
Performance Outcome:
The member, while operating on a simulate fire ground; is to be able to set up a
portable monitor for a master stream operation.

Candidate Directives:
Deploy all necessary hose and equipment. Set up a portable monitor to hit the
designated target.
Critical Errors:
If the member performs any of the following errors, the evolution is to be terminated,
as it would be a failure of the current test attempt.
• Perform an unsafe act which could result in injury to himself/herself or
the public.
• Perform an act which did or could have damaged equipment.

316.031 SET UP A PORTABLE MONITOR

No. Set Up a Portable Monitor (Task Steps) P *F P *F
1. Obtain all proper equipment and deliver to specified location.
• Portable monitor from top of engine.
• Monitor base (w/chain or strap).
• Spanners.
• Double male (if needed).
2. Deploy enough LDH to create an appropriate 50’ loop around the
monitor with 10 feet straight back from the nozzle discharge.
3. Remove any excessive kinks.
4. Ensure all supply connections are made and inform engineer of
nozzle type, hose length, and discharge number.
5. Deploy base and attach monitor to base.
• Stinger: Two clicks should be heard and verbalized.
• TFT Crossfire: Slide lock should be engaged and checked.
6. Use strap or chain to secure base to hose.
7. Connect LDH to portable monitor.
8. Utilize spanners on couplings at monitor and ensure they
are tight.
9. Call for water, controlling the fire stream correctly towards the
designated target.
