APPLICATION Individual performance evolutions (IPEs) are used to document skill level performance. OPERATIONAL POLICY This section intentionally left blank. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE Active members are to perform IPEs without any failures in task steps. PROCESS Equipment Needed: One candidate in full wildland personal protective equipment, one training fire shelter, and one wildland hand tool. Task: Following the necessary steps, identify the criteria which would make the most effective deployment site and deploy a fire shelter. Performance Outcome: The candidate is to be able to deploy a fire shelter quickly and efficiently within 30 seconds. Select Deployment Area: • Away from rolling material. • Away from chimney, draws and steep terrain. • Largest available clearing. • Lightest fuel loading. • Possible burned over area. • Not in roadways. 2. Clear Deployment Area: • Utilize existing clearing. • Scrape down mineral soil. • Minimum 4’ x 8’, if time permits. • As large as time permits. • Fire out if conditions warrant. 3. Place all flammable materials 30’ away from deployment area. 4. Set hand tool aside, keep only water/radio. Deploy the Shelter (30 Sec Maximum) 5. Open carrying case. 6. Pull shelter from case using yellow/orange pull strap. 7. Open plastic protective case and remove shelter. 8. Using handles, unfold the shelter while always maintaining control. 9. Fully open shelter and enter shelter while lying down. 10. Lie on stomach and orient feet towards fire, if possible. 11. Anchor Shelter: • Maintain maximum airspace in shelter. • Anchor flaps with arms and legs. • Maintain full fire shelter seal to ground contact.
