SECTION 316.027 OPERATE A SALVAGE MASTER
PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to provide instructions to Fresno Fire Department (FFD
or Department) members on the operation of a Salvage Master back pump.
APPLICATION
Individual Performance Evolutions (IPE’s) are used to document skill level
performance.
OPERATIONAL POLICY

OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Active members should perform IPE without any failures in task steps.
PROCESS
1. Equipment Needs:
One candidate in full personal protective equipment and one salvage
master back pump.
2. Task:
Using a salvage master back pump, remove water from a specified
area.
3. Performance Outcome:
The candidate, while operating on a simulated fire ground, is to be able
to properly don and operate a salvage master back pump for water

removal operations as well as inspect and clean the unit to place back
in service.
4. Candidate Directives:
Assemble and deploy the salvage master back pump. Proceed to
remove water from one specified area and transfer to another utilizing
this tool.
5. Critical Errors:
If the member performs any of the following errors, the evolution is
terminated as it would be a failure of the current test attempt.
a. Performed an unsafe act that could have damaged
equipment or resulted in injury to him/her or the public.
b. Perform an act which did or could have damaged
equipment.

1. Locate and properly assemble Salvage Master.
2. Test wall receptacle, if used.
3. Use straps to don onto back.
4. Disposal cap must be in place before operating.
5. Turn on and fill tank to capacity.
6. Properly empty tank after completed task.
Clean a Salvage Master
1. Inspect/check valve assembly.
2. Check motor inlet for debris.
3. Flush tank and wand with water.
4. Rinse outside of tank.
5. Dry completely.
6. Replace motor assembly.
7. Do not allow water to enter motor housing.
