APPLICATION Individual performance evolutions (IPE’s) are used to document skill level performance. OPERATIONAL POLICY This section intentionally left blank. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE Active members should perform IPE without any failures in task steps. PROCESS 1. Equipment Needed: Member with full personal protective equipment with Self-contained Breathing Apparatus, various fire extinguishers and a burn pan. 2. Task: Identify and extinguish an incipient class A, B, or C fire by selecting the proper extinguishing agent. 3. Performance Outcome: The member should identify and select the correct fire extinguisher, extinguish a class A, B or C fire as identified by the skills evaluator, and ensure correct extinguisher handling and techniques are followed. Candidate Directive: Select the correct fire extinguisher for a Class A, B, or C fire, approach, extinguish, and withdraw from the area after the fire is extinguished. Only one extinguisher may be used. Begin on my instruction to start. The skill ends when you return the fire extinguisher to its original location. 5. Critical Errors: If the member performs any of the following errors, the evolution is to be terminated and the candidate fails the current test attempt. Perform an unsafe act, which could result in injury to himself / herself or the public. Perform an act which damaged or could have damaged equipment. Correctly identify the class of fire (Class A, B, or C). 2. Select the appropriate extinguisher based on the size and type of fire. 3. Properly activate the extinguisher (pulls pin or punctures cartridge). 4. Test the operation of the extinguisher by brief discharge prior to approaching the fire. 5. Safely carry the fire extinguishers and approach the fire from upwind. 6. Approach to an effective distance for discharge of the selected extinguisher: Water: Maximum 30 feet AFFF: Maximum 20 feet Dry Chemical: Maximum 20 feet CO2: Maximum 8 feet 7. Discharge the extinguishing agent on the base of the fire and sweep over the fire area. 8. Advance on the remaining burning material while continuing to extinguish the hot spots. 9. Extinguish the fire and check for remaining hot spots. 10. If a class C fire, verify the item is de-energized. Critical Errors P *F P *F 1.
