John Ross, Fire Captain Review Level: 1 Administrative Support: Crystal Giannopulos, Senior Administrative Clerk ADA PURPOSE The purpose of this policy is to provide instruction to Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department) members on ventilation procedures to improve rescue and firefighter operations and increase life safety for firefighters and victims. APPLICATION Individual performance evolutions (IPE) are used to document skill level performance. OPERATIONAL POLICY This section intentionally left blank. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE Active members should perform Individual Performance Evolutions without any failures. PROCESS 1. Equipment Needs: One member in full personal protective equipment with SCBA, a powered blower (fan), and a smoke-filled structure. Section 316.022 Page 2 of 6 2. Task: Using the positive pressure (forced air) method, ventilate a structure. 3. Performance Outcome: The member, while operating on a simulated fire ground, is to be able to operate a powered fan to remove smoke from a structure. 4. Candidate Directive: Ventilate a structure with a powered fan utilizing the “positive pressure” method. 5. Critical Errors: If the member performs any of the following errors, the evolution is to be terminated as it would be a failure of the current test attempt. a. Perform an unsafe act which could result in injury to him/her or the public. b. Perform an act which did or could have damaged equipment. INFORMATION This section intentionally left blank. Position the fan at desired location for positive pressure ventilation. • For higher volume, position 2 fans inline, placing the smaller fan behind the larger unit. 2. Utilize exhaust hose if gas powered. 3. Prepare structure for positive pressure ventilation. • Close all doors, windows, or openings. • Designate exhaust opening. • Exhaust opening must be ¾ to 1 ¾ the size of the entrance opening. 4. Confirm coordination with fire attack crews before starting fan. 5. Check for proper coverage over point of entry. 6. Evacuate smoke from each area by opening/closing exhaust openings. 7.
