John Ross, Fire Captain Current Revision Date: 7/25/2022 Section 316.021 Next Revision (1) Date: 7/25/2024 Page 1 of 4 300 Training and Equipment Manual SECTION 316.021 VENTILATE A ROOF WITH A POWER SAW INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE EVOLUTION PURPOSE Chainsaws assist firefighters in ventilation, rescue, and hazard mitigation for Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department). Preforming vertical ventilation can be critical in improving conditions for interior crews and victims inside the structure by assisting in removing smoke, heat, and gasses. APPLICATION Individual performance evolutions (IPEs) are used to document skill level performance. OPERATIONAL POLICY This section intentionally left blank. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE Active members should perform IPEs without any failures in task steps. PROCESS Equipment Needed: One (1) firefighter in full personal protective equipment, one (1) SCBA, one (1) truck with a full complement of hose and equipment, one (1) chainsaw, one (1) rubbish hook, and one (1) pick-head axe. Task: Take aloft the necessary tools required to ventilate a roof and make a ventilation hole. Fresno City Fire Department Effective Date: January 2010 E. Candidate Directive: Take aloft all the necessary tools required to ventilate a roof and make a ventilation hole. Critical Errors: If the member performs any of the following errors, the evolution is terminated, as it would be a failure of the current test attempt. • Perform an unsafe act which could result in injury to himself/herself or the public. • Perform an act which did or could have damaged equipment. Collect and organize necessary equipment and tools, ensuring power tools start and are operating correctly. 2. Locate position for opening at highest point on roof above fire. 3. Properly and safely place ladder to roof. 4. Correctly carry roof ladder (if needed) while ascending ground ladder and place in position on roof, making sure it is upwind from intended ventilation area. 5. Hoist or carry tools to roof utilizing teamwork. 6. Sound roof with a hand tool and locate roof joists and rafters so the opening will not compromise structural integrity. 7. Strip off excess roofing material if needed. (Tile, gravel, etc.) 8. Trade tools with team member to perform cutting operation. 9. Make a 4’x4’ minimum opening in a safe and efficient manner. • Avoid cutting through roof supports/rafters. 10. Trade tools with team member to perform louver operation. 11. Louver roofing material over vent hole. • Do not purposely knock roofing material into attic. 12. Coordinate with interior crews and push ceiling through, ensuring the opening is completely clear of all obstructions. 13. Exit roof immediately after performing ventilation. • Sound roof while returning to ladder. 14. Return equipment to service. Critical Errors P *F P *F 1.
