One must know how to tie the necessary knot to avoid situations which could lead to injury while hoisting or lowering equipment for the Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department). APPLICATION Individual Performance Evolutions (IPEs) are used to document skill level performance. OPERATIONAL POLICY This section intentionally left blank. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE Active members are to perform IPEs without any failures in task steps. PROCESS Equipment Needed: Adequate rope(s), a tool or piece of equipment, and full protective equipment. Task: Tie a knot appropriate for hoisting a tool and/or piece of equipment aloft and safely raise aloft while maintaining control of the tool or piece of equipment. Candidate Directive: “Given a tool or piece of equipment which has been selected and rope, tie a knot appropriate for the tool or equipment and hoist or have some hoisted for you to the designated floor.” Critical Errors: If the member performs any of the following errors, the evolution is terminated, as it would be a failure of the current test attempt. • Perform an unsafe act which could result in injury to himself/herself or the public. • Perform an act which did or could have damaged equipment. Select the tool(s) and/or pieces of equipment to be hoisted:  Axe (must be hoisted head down).  Pike pole (must be hoisted head up).  Smoke ejector.  Chain saw.  Hose line (wet or dry).  Ground ladder. Fire Axe – 45 seconds 1. Figure eight on a bight or clove hitch around the axe head. 2. Half hitch around top of axe handle. Pike Pole – 45 seconds 1. Pike end up. 2. Clove hitch around end of handle. 3. At least one, preferably two half hitches (last one at pike head). Extinguisher – 45 seconds 1. Clove hitch around bottom of extinguisher. 2. Half hitches evenly spaced around extinguisher. Ground Ladder – 45 seconds 1. Large figure eight on a bight or bowline is formed and passed, through rungs of ladder one-third from the top of ladder. 2. Pull through rungs and slip over top of ladder forming a lark’s foot. 3. Student verbalizes a tag line should be used. Chainsaw – 45 seconds 1. Form a large bowline or figure eight on a bight. 2. Pass around large handle, then around body of saw to form a lark’s foot. 3. Rope should not rest on chain. Smoke Ejector – 45 seconds 1. Form and create a large bowline or figure 8 follow through, around the top supports of the fan. 2 Student verbalizes tag line should be used. Charged Hose Line – 45 seconds 1. Clove hitch approximately three feet from coupling. 2. Half hitch approximately one foot from coupling. Half hitch around nozzle holding bale closed. Uncharged Hose Line – 45 seconds. 1. Hose folded over itself approximately three to five feet. 2. Clove hitch used to tie nozzle and hose together. 3. Secure with two evenly spaced half hitches toward hose fold. Critical Errors P *F P *F 1. Performed an unsafe act which could have resulted in injury to himself/herself or the public. 2.
