PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to provide instruction to Fresno Fire Department (FFD or
Department) members on the proper method of carrying a roof ladder aloft.
APPLICATION
Individual Performance Evolutions (IPE) are used to document skill level performance.
OPERATIONAL POLICY

OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Active members should perform IPE without any failures in task steps.
PROCESS
1. Equipment Needed:
One member in full personal protective equipment with SCBA and one engine
with full complement of hose and equipment.
2. Task:
Safely carry and raise a roof ladder aloft in preparation for a roof operation.

3. Performance Outcome:
The candidate, while operating on a simulated fire ground, is to be able to carry
a roof ladder aloft and engage the hooks in preparation for a roof operation.
4. Candidate Directive:
Carry a roof ladder aloft to prepare for roof operations.
5. Critical Errors:
If the member performs any of the following errors, the evolution is terminated
as it would be a failure of the current test attempt.
1) Perform an unsafe act which could result in injury to him/her or the
public.
2) Perform an act which did or could have damaged equipment.

1. Remove the ladder from apparatus.
2. Properly lift and carry the ladder to designated point.
3. Utilize appropriate verbal commands.
4. Visually check work area for hazards and verbalize if the area is safe to
raise the ladder.
5. Place the ladder at base of the climbing ladder and extend the roof hooks
correctly.
6. Raise the roof ladder into vertical position.
7. Position the roof ladder securely leaning against climbing ladder.
8. Climb the ladder and appropriately shoulder the roof ladder.
9. Climb the ladder to appropriate height to remove the roof ladder.
10. Use the leg lock while placing the roof ladder.
11. Place the roof ladder so hooks secure to the roof ridge.
12. Lower the ladders and safely return to the apparatus.
13. Perform the task at a fire ground pace.
