SECTION 316.013 CARRY AND RAISE A 24-FOOT EXTENSION LADDER
PURPOSE
Ladders are an essential tool in fire ground operations used to gain access to roofs,
windows, and assist in rescue operations.
APPLICATION
Individual Performance Evolutions (IPE’s) are used to document skill level
performance.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
When performing IPE’s, members shall wear full personal protective equipment and
self-contained breathing apparatus as determined by the IPE.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Active members should perform IPE without any failures in task steps.
PROCESS
Equipment Needed: One candidate in full personal protective equipment, one SCBA,
one fire engine with a full complement of hose and equipment, and one second-story
window or landing.
Task: Lift, carry, and raise 24’ extension ladder for an assigned task and return the
ladder safely to the designated area.
Performance Outcome: The member, while operating on a simulated ground, is to be
able to lift, carry, and raise a 24’ extension ladder for an assigned task and return the
ladder safely to the designated area.
Candidate Directive: Lift, carry, and raise a 24-foot extension ladder for an assigned
task and return the ladder safely to the designated area.

Critical Errors: If the member performs any of the following errors, the evolution will
be terminated, as it would be a failure of the current test attempt.

1. Remove the ladder from apparatus.
2. Properly lift and carry the ladder to the designated point.
3. Utilize appropriate verbal commands.
4. Visually check work area for hazards and verbalize if the area
is safe to raise the ladder.
5. Spot and properly raise the ladder upright.
6. Extend and secure the fly at the proper length.
7. Lower the ladder against a stable wall or surface.
8. Rotate the ladder so the fly is facing out.
9. Adjust to proper climbing angle and assure 4 points of
contact.

Position ladder correctly for task given:
• Ventilation
• Rescue
• Entry into a window
• Work with a hose line (no entry)
Roof access
11. Lower ladder and safely return to apparatus.
12. Perform a task at a fire ground pace.
