John Ross, Fire Captain Review Level: 1 Administrative Support: Crystal Giannopulos, Senior Administrative Clerk ADA PURPOSE Ladders are an essential tool in fire ground operations used to gain access to attics, windows, and assist in rescue operations. APPLICATION Individual Performance Evolutions (IPE’s) are used to document skill level performance. OPERATIONAL POLICY When performing IPE’s, members shall wear full personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus as determined by the IPE. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE Active members should perform IPE without any failures in task steps. PROCESS Equipment Needed: One candidate in full personal protective equipment, one SCBA, and one engine with a full complement of hose and equipment. Section 316.012 Page 2 of 5 Task: The member is to carry and raise a 10-foot extension ladder and proceed to the specified location demonstrating the three 10-foot extension ladder (attic ladder) carries. Performance Outcome: The member is to carry a 10-foot extension ladder in all the three methods (shoulder, vertical, and under-arm) safely extend, place ladder, and retract fly section. Candidate Directives: Lift, carry, and raise a 10-foot extension ladder (attic ladder) demonstrating all three carrying methods. Once completed, return the ladder safely to designated area. Critical Errors: If the member performs any of the following errors, the evolution is to be terminated, as it would be a failure of the current test attempt. . • Perform an unsafe act which could result in injury to himself/herself or the public. • Perform an act which did or could have damaged equipment. Remove ladder from apparatus. 2. Properly lift and carry ladder to designated point. 3. Utilize appropriate verbal commands. 4. Demonstrate three ladder carries: • Shoulder method • Vertical method • Under-arm method 5. Visually check work area for hazards and verbalize if area is safe to raise the ladder. 6. Spot and properly raise the ladder upright. 7. Extend and secure the fly at the proper length. 8. Lower ladder against stable wall or surface. 9. Adjust to proper climbing angle and assure 4 points of contact. 10. Lower ladder and safely return to apparatus. 11. Perform a task at a fire ground pace. Critical Errors P *F P *F 1.
