316.011 CARRY AND RAISE A STRAIGHT LADDER

PURPOSE
Ladders are an essential tool used in fire ground operations to gain access to roofs,
windows, and assist in rescue operations.
APPLICATION
Individual Performance Evolutions (IPE) is used to document skill level performance.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
When performing IPE’s, members shall wear full personal protective equipment and self-
contained breathing apparatus as determined by the IPE.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Active members should perform IPE without any failures in task steps.
PROCESS
Equipment Needed:
One candidate in full personal protective equipment, one SCBA, and one apparatus with
a full complement of hose and equipment.

Task:
The member is to raise, place accordingly, and remove a straight ladder according to the
steps provided.
Performance Outcome:
The member, while operating on a simulated fire ground, is to be able to select, carry,
raise, and stow a straight ladder.
Candidate Directive:
Select the appropriate straight ladder for assigned task. Proceed to the designated point
and raise the ladder for roof/window access. Once completed, safely reverse process and
return the ladder to the designated area.
Critical Errors:
If the member performs any of the following errors, the evolution is to be terminated, as it
would be a failure of the current test attempt.
• Perform an unsafe act which could result in injury to himself/herself or the
public.
• Perform an act which did or could have damaged equipment.

1. Remove appropriate ladder from apparatus.
2. Properly lift and carry ladder to designated point.
3. Utilize appropriate verbal commands.
4. Visually check work area for hazards and verbalize if area is safe
to raise the ladder.
5. Spot and properly raise the ladder upright.
6. Adjust to proper climbing angle when ladder is vertical and
assure 4 points of contact.
7. Position ladder correctly for task given.
8. Lower ladder and safely return to apparatus.
9. Perform a task at a fire ground pace.
