John Ross, Fire Captain Review Level: 1 Administrative Support: Crystal Giannopulos, Senior Administrative Clerk ADA PURPOSE Rapid establishment of a water supply helps to protect the safety of fire attack groups and ensures that companies have a continuous water supply to support suppression efforts. APPLICATION Individual Performance Evolutions (IPE’s) are used to document skill level. OPERATIONAL POLICY When performing IPE’s, members shall wear full personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus as determined by the IPE. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE Active members should perform IPE without any failures in task steps. PROCESS 1. Equipment Needed: Engine with full standard complement hose and equipment, full personal protective equipment with Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). Section 316.008 Page 1 of 4 2. Task: The member should advance 200 feet of large-diameter hose from a properly loaded hose bed to a hydrant and connect to the hydrant. 3. Performance Outcome: The member while operating on a simulated fire ground, should be able to deploy and advance 5-inch LDH to a hydrant, and proceed to make a connection for a water supply. 4. Candidate Directive: “Advance 200 feet of 5-inch LDH to the designated hydrant and proceed to make a connection for a water supply.” 5. Critical Errors: If the member performs any of the following errors, the evolution will be terminated, as it would be a failure of the current test attempt. • Perform an unsafe act which could result in injury to himself/herself or the public. • Perform an act which did or could have damaged equipment. Identify type of hydrant, if possible, and obtain proper hydrant wrench. 2. Remove female coupling of large-diameter hose from hose bed and place under arm and over opposite shoulder. 3. Turn towards direction of travel and advance to the hydrant, maintaining control of the hose and coupling. 4. Identify and navigate any hazards or obstacles ensuring proper hose deployment. 5. At hydrant, advance far enough that it may be wrapped around or attached to hydrant. 6. Remove hydrant cap with wrench, turn proper direction on the first try. 7. Open hydrant with wrench, turn proper direction on the first try. 8. Flush hydrant appropriately and close hydrant valve. 9. Attach female coupling of large-diameter hose to hydrant. 11. Call for water. When ready to flow hydrant, open appropriately to limit water hammer to engine. Critical Errors P *F P *F 1.
