SECTION 316.004 ADVANCE A 5-INCH HOSE TO A STANDPIPE OR SPRINKLER
SYSTEM FDC
PURPOSE
Standpipes are used to deliver water to hand lines for firefighting operations to obtain
effective fire streams on large, low buildings or above-ground floors of multi-story
structures. Sprinkler systems are designed to activate when they detect the fire's heat,
delivering water to extinguish or slow the spread of the fire.
Proper knowledge in supplying water to these systems is critical in fire suppression
efforts.
APPLICATION
Individual Performance Evolutions (IPEs) are used to document skill level
performance.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
This section intentionally left blank.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Active members should perform IPE without any failures in task steps.
PROCESS
Equipment Needed:
One (1) candidate in full personal protective equipment (PPE), one (1) Self-Contained
Breathing Apparatus, one (1) Fire Department Connection (FDC) for a standpipe
system or sprinkler system, and one (1) engine with a full complement of hose and
equipment.

Section 316.004
Task:
Deploy and advance a 5-inch supply line to a specified location and proceed to make
connection to supply a standpipe or sprinkler system FDC.
Note: Apparatus Engineer should disconnect couplings and make
all necessary connections to the engine.
Performance Outcome:
The candidate, while operating on a simulated fire ground, will be able to deploy 5-
inch hose to make a connection to supply a standpipe or sprinkler system FDC.
Candidate Directive:
Using a 5-inch supply line and all necessary equipment, deploy and make connection
to supply a standpipe or sprinkler system FDC.
Critical Errors:
If the candidate performs any of the following errors, the examination is terminated,
as it would be a failure of the current test attempt.
•Performed an unsafe act which could have resulted in
injury to himself/herself or the public.
•Performed an act which damaged or could have
damaged equipment.

Advance a 5-Inch Hose to an FDC P *F P *F
1. Remove spanner(s), hydrant wrench(es), KNOX FDC key, mallet, and the
appropriate 4.5” to 2.5” adaptor.
2. Grasp female coupling of 5” hose and place it under an arm and over an
opposite shoulder.
3. Advance hose to FDC ensuring proper hose deployment avoiding
excessive kinks. Advance enough hose to make connection.
4. Clamp hose line as appropriate based on the tactic or ensure hose line is
not charged until contact is made with the apparatus engineer.
5. Prior to making the hose connection to the FDC, remove any plugs, caps,
or locks. Remove any debris with tools or gloved hand. Test for proper
clapper valve operation with handle end of hydrant wrench (and mallet if
necessary) prior to charging FDC.
6. Connect the 5” hose to the FDC.
7. For a vertical arrangement, connect the 5” hose to the bottom inlet first.
8. For a horizontal arrangement connect the 5” hose to the furthest right inlet
first.
9. Charge the FDC after hose clamp removal or contact with the apparatus
engineer is made.
10. FDC may be supplemented with additional 5” or 2.5” hose if required.
Critical Errors P *F P *F
1. Performed an unsafe act that could have resulted in injury to
himself/herself or the public.
2.
Performed an act which damaged equipment.
*10-minute rest period minimum before retest attempt
