VENTILATION

PURPOSE
Promote training and assist in measuring fire ground effectiveness of crews
performing vertical ventilation.
APPLICATION
Using vertical ventilation to remove smoke and superheated gases from a structure
fire can assist interior crews with search and extinguishment operations. Assessing
conditions, accessing the roof, and cutting a standard 4’ x 4’ ventilation hole is an
evolution all crews should be proficient in.
OPERATIONAL POLICY

OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Halyard should be tied correctly.
Aerial apparatus should be spotted into position to allow for roof access with aerial
ladder.
Ground ladders should be removed, carried, and raised per Fresno Fire Department
(FFD) policy.
Ground ladder should be placed at a proper climbing angle.
Chainsaw should be carried and operated in safe manner per Training and
Equipment Manual, Section 309.001, Chainsaws.

PROCESS
Time begins when the air break on the apparatus has been set and ends when a
ventilation hole has been cut, cleared of debris, and crews are off the roof.
Equipment Needed: One company with members in full PPE, including SCBA; an
acquired building roof, or roof mock-up; simulated building materials, or other
training aids in lieu of actural acquired structure or training tower.
Task: Position the apparatus; size-up for correct ladder and ventilation placement;
carry, raise, and secure the ground ladder or set up the aerial ladder; carry all
tools/roof ladders to position; make ventilation hole; remove all ventilation barriers;
and return company to service.
Performance Outcome: A 4’ x 4’ ventilation hole cut on a roof or simulated roof.
Company Directive: Spot apparatus for vertical ventilation operation. Size-up for
correct ladder and ventilation placement. Access roof using aerial or ground ladder.
Cut standard 4’ x 4’ ventilation hole, clear hole and exit roof. This task should be
completed within 8 minutes.
