PURPOSE
Promote training for, and assist in measuring fire ground effectiveness of, crews
performing a drafting evolution.
APPLICATION
All extended fire suppression operations require a reliable water supply. In areas
where fire hydrants are scarce, a drafting operation can be used. Crews need to be
able to identify the location of, and quickly secure a water supply from, a static water
source.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
This section intentionally left blank.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
All hose lines should be completely deployed from hosebeds prior to charging.
Hose lines should not have kinks which would reduce the effectiveness of water
delivery.
All nozzles should operate at appropriate pressures to achieve stated gpm.
Members operating near the edge of a static water source should not wear turnout
gear and should have on a Personal Floatation Device.

PROCESS
Time begins when apparatus stops at fire scene and ends when water is flowing at
required pressure and supply line has been established. Second apparatus waits 30
seconds after start time before responding to simulate difference in response time.
Equipment Needed: Two engine companies with members in full PPE, including
SCBA for handline crew.
Task: Deploy and flow two pre-connected hand lines from the pumping apparatus.
Pumping apparatus to be supplied by a reverse lay from a second apparatus drafting
from a static source 300 feet away.
Performance Outcome: A minimum of 300 gpm flowing from two pre-connected
hand lines supplied by a second appartus drfafting from a static source.
Company Directive: Deploy two pre-connected handlines from the pumping
apparatus. Second apparatus to reverse lay from the pumping apparatus to a static
water source and perform a drafting operation. Second apparatus waits 30 seconds
