PURPOSE
Promote training and assist in measuring fire ground effectiveness of crews
performing an apartment lay evolution.
APPLICATION
The use of the apartment lay allows fire personnel to quickly place one or two 1 ¾”
hose bundles at an emergency scene beyond the reach of pre-connected hand
lines.
OPERATIONAL POLICY

OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
All hose lines should be completely deployed from hosebeds prior to charging.
Hose lines should not have kinks which would reduce the effectiveness of water
delivery.
All nozzles should operate at appropriate pressures to achieve stated gpm.
PROCESS
Time begins when apparatus stops at fire hydrant and ends when water is flowing at
required pressure and supply line has been established.

Equipment Needed: One engine company with members in full PPE, including
SCBA.
Task: Perform an apartment lay, 300’ long, utilizing two 100’ 1 ¾” hose bundles.
Performance Outcome: Extend 300’ of 2 ½” hose. Connect and flow two 1 ¾” hose
bundles.
Company Directive: Spot apparatus near a hydrant. Deploy 300’ of 2 ½” hose (Line
1) to the target area. Connect two 100’ apartment 1 ¾” hose bundles. Establish a
water supply from hydrant and flow both bundles (capable of flowing 400 gpm) The
bundles may be charged while coiled. The task should be completed within 4
minutes.
