PURPOSE
The ability to provide Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department) apparatus quickly
and efficiently with proper pressures to enable a fire attack crew to immediately initiate
fire attack is a critical job skill needed by all FFD engineers.
APPLICATION
Individual performance evolutions (IPE) are used to document skill level performance.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
This section intentionally left blank.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Active members should perform IPE without any failures in task steps within the time
given.
PROCESS
Instructions to Candidate:
The operator is to be given a simulated scenario to supply two (2) different discharges
requiring different discharge pressures.
Section 313.010a

Equipment and Personnel Requirements:
Operator wearing helmet and gloves.
FFD pumping apparatus.
Hose line requiring different pressures.
Firefighter wearing helmet and gloves.
Hydrant.
Evolution:
A recommendation for improvement is indicated by a checkmark in a box with
standard text (non-bold font).
A need for improvement and scheduling of an evolution is indicated by a checkmark
in a box with standard text in bold font.
The evolution should stop any evolution when unsafe acts or conditions occur.

No. Task Steps 1st
Attempt
2nd
Attempt
1. Prepare pumper to pump water.
(Refer to IPE Section 313.005a)
2. Secure a supply.
(Refer to IPE Section 313.007a)
3. Charge hose lines.
(Refer to IPE Sections 313.006a and 313.009a)
3b. Charge higher pressure line first when given the option.
4. Set discharge with highest PDP to ensure appropriate supply.
5. Properly set Pump Boss/Pressure Control Valve.
6. Attempts communicate to firefighters on lower PDP line may be
necessary, advise them to prepare for excessive pressures
when their nozzle is initially opened.
7. Gate down lower pressure line appropriately.
8. Never allow discharge pressures to fall below or exceed target
PDP by more than 30 psi.
9. Check undercarriage for leaks.
10. Assess water supply / update command, as needed.
11. Observe the following: Water Tank Level, Engine Temp., Oil
Pressure.
12. Note abnormal noises or concerns.
13. Operator performs safely, confidently, and efficiently.
14. Additional notes:
*10-minute rest period minimum before retest attempt
