PURPOSE
To measure a pump operator’s ability to quickly and efficiently provide adequate hose
line pressure(s) to 2 ½” handlines.
APPLICATION
Individual performance evolutions (IPE) are used to document skill level performance.

PROCESS
Instructions to the Operator:
The operator is given a simulated scenario to flow a 2-1/2” handline.
Equipment and Personnel Requirements:
Operator wearing helmet and gloves.
1 FFD pumping apparatus.
1 2-1/2” hose and nozzle.
1 Firefighter wearing helmet and gloves.

Instructions to the Evaluator:
The evaluator should stop any evolution when unsafe acts or conditions occur.
Evolution:
A recommendation for improvement is indicated by a checkmark in a box with
standard text (non-bold font).
A need for improvement and scheduling of an evolution is indicated by a checkmark
in a box with standard text in bold font.

Supplying 2-1/2-Inch Handlines

1. Prepare pumper to pump water. (Refer to IPE Section
313.005a)
2. Secure a supply. (Refer to IPE Section 313.007a)
3. Ensure ample hose has been flaked out for advancement.
4. Make 2-1/2” connection to an appropriate discharge.
5. Remove significant kinks.
6. Check for visual or audible call for water from firefighter.
7. Call “water coming” to firefighter(s).
8. Locate appropriate discharge valve handle/controller and
associated discharge gauge.
9. Charge hose line at a controlled rate.
10. Set appropriate discharge pressure. (Refer to Section
303.005)
10a. Observe hose line specific discharge gauge.
11. Properly Set Pump Boss/Pressure Control Valve
12. Never allow discharge pressures to fall below or exceed
target PDP by more than 30 psi.
13. Check undercarriage for leaks.
14. Assess water supply / update command, as needed.
15. Observe the following: Water Tank Level, Engine Temp.,
Oil Pressure.
16. Note abnormal noises or concerns.
17. Additional notes:
Critical Errors:
1. Perform an unsafe act which could result in injury to
himself / herself, crew, or the public.
2. Perform an act which did or could have damaged
equipment.
