SECTION 313.005a STANDARD PUMP OPERATION
INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE EVOLUTION
PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to provide standard operating procedures to successfully,
safely, and methodically prepare a Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department)
pumping apparatus to deliver water which is critical to fire ground operations.
APPLICATION
Individual performance evolutions (IPEs) are used to document skill level
performance.
OPERATIONAL POLICY

OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Active members should perform (IPEs) without any failures in task steps within the
time provided.
PROCESS
Equipment Needed:
Operator wearing helmet and gloves.
FFD pumping apparatus.
Task:
The candidate is tasked with preparing an FFD pumping apparatus to deliver water
and then return the apparatus to “available” condition.

Performance Outcome:
The candidate is to set the brake, engage the pump, and observe at a minimum the
water tank level, engine temperature, and oil pressure. The candidate is to return the
apparatus to “available” condition.
Critical Errors:
If the candidate performs any of the following errors, the evolution is terminated as it
would be a failure of the current test attempt.
Performed an unsafe act, which could have resulted in injury to
himself / herself or the public.
Performed an act, which did or could have damaged equipment.

1. Reasonable spot location.
2. Set break.
3. Engage pump.
4. Ensure the speedometer reads 5 to 15 mph.
5. Secure radio channel / communications via
portable or external speaker.
6. Confirm pressure at pump discharge gauge.
7. Don appropriate PPE.
8. Place wheel chock(s) with gloved hands.
9. Confirm anticipated PDP can be developed.
10. Check undercarriage for significant leaks.
11. Confirm the Pump Cooling Valve is open.
12. Consider the Engine Cooling Valve.
13. At a minimum, observe the following:
Water Tank Level.
Engine Temperature.
Oil Pressure.
14. Note abnormal noises or concerns.
15. Return apparatus to “available” condition:
Water tank full.
Adjust relief valve.
Pump gear shift to “Road”.
Drains and discharges.
Equipment.
