PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to provide Fresno Fire Department (FFD or
Department) Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) members with information on how
to properly and safely use an Ellis Screw Jack. (See Figure 1.)

APPLICATION
For USAR members to properly and safely use during shoring, trench, or any other
emergency call where this method of pressurizing shoring is deemed necessary.

PROCESS
1. Operating Procedure:
a. Measure overall height to be shored.
b. Deduct the depth for the header, sole plate, and post screw
jack. (See Figure 2.)
c. Measure and cut vertical post.

d. Tap in duplex nails in vertical shore to prevent movement.
(See Figure 3.)

e. Pressurize the spot shore by twisting the post screw jack
clockwise. (See Figure 4.)

f. Tap two duplex nails into the sole plate through the nail holes
in the screw jack base. (See Figure 5.)
g. Evaluate shore and structure.
INFORMATION
1. Specifications:
15,000 lbs. capacity.
14.24 inches overall length (screwed down.)
6-inch full adjustment.
Inner pipe is greased to resist rusting.
Base plate will not turn with screw; four holes are provided to
secure the base to a solid foundation.

Lifts 1,800 lbs. by hand.
Lifts 4,000 lbs. with a 2”x4”x6’ piece of lumber placed between
screw and handle as lever.
