APPLICATION The Bendix King GPH CMD is the primary portable radio used by the Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department) on strike teams, overhead deployments, and mutual-aid assignments with outside agencies for both emergency and non- emergency radio communications. It is imperative all members are intimately familiar with the use, features, and components of the radio since, at an emergency scene, this radio becomes a firefighter’s lifeline. The Bendix King GPH CMD is a two-way radio which transmits and receives on VHF between 136 MHz and 174 MHz. The radio offers 500 channels (25 groups of 20 channels) and has a power output when transmitting between 1 and 5 watts. The Bendix King GPH CMD has a designated incident group (Group 15) to be used for loading incident channels pertaining to the incident assigned. If the portable radio is cloned at an incident, contact the Communications Team upon return to the station to ensure the radio is reprogrammed. This will ensure the programming parameters are returned to their original settings. OPERATIONAL POLICY This section intentionally left blank. Channel Selector: The channel selector switches the radio to different channels within the selected group (1-25). There is no channel bezel. 4. Direct/Repeater: The Department’s Bendix King GPH CMD radios are normally kept in Repeater mode. In Repeater mode, the radio will utilize a repeater to transmit traffic. This will allow the radio to send a signal and have the signal repeated to a radio receiving site, Section 305.002f Page 2 of 29 which is potentially out of sight, increasing the distance (strength) the radio is able to transmit. Direct mode (Talkaround mode) enables one radio to communicate with another radio when the repeater is not operating or the radio is out of the repeater’s range but within communicating distance of another radio (line of sight). 5. Scan: Scanning allows the user to operate on a specific channel while monitoring the radio traffic on other channels 6. Priority Scan: Priority Scan enables the radio to receive on any channel while monitoring for a message on the designated priority channel. 7. For example, if the user’s radio has only five channel groups programmed, digits greater than five will be ignored. When changing groups, invalid entries will not be accepted and the radio remains in the previously selected group. Groups 1 through 25 are preprogrammed. Group 15 is reserved for major incident radio plan cloning. Group 15 will normally be programmed at the incident by the Communications Unit. Selecting a Radio Channel Following are steps for selecting a radio channel: 1. Select the appropriate group, if necessary. 2. Turn the channel selector knob clockwise or counterclockwise until the desired channel is reached, as shown in the LCD display. 3. With the Bendix King GPH CMD a series of beeps will be heard when the user is either at channel 20 or channel 1. A number bezel is not present. Scan Operation Scanning Defined: Scanning allows the user to operate on a specific channel while monitoring the radio traffic on other channels. It does not allow the user to talk on the channels being scanned. The user must move the channel selector knob to talk on a channel. Normal Operation With Switch B (SCAN) up and Switch C (PRI) down, the display indicates scan operation by flashing SCN. Scan operates only while the radio is not transmitting. The radio checks for signals on channels in the preset scan list, as well as the channel selected by the channel selector knob. When a signal is detected, scanning stops and the message is received. The received channel is shown in place of the transmit channel. Once the signal ends, the radio continues to monitor the channel for the preset scan delay time before scanning resumes. Section 305.002f Page 6 of 29 Transmitting with the Scan Feature On When Switch B (SCAN) is up, the radio transmits on the channel selected by the channel selector knob. Select a transmit channel by turning the channel selector knob. Press the PTT switch and speak in a normal voice. When the PTT switch is released, the radio continues to monitor the selected channel for the preset scan delay time before scanning resumes. Changing the Scan List The Bendix King GPH CMD radio can be programmed to enable the user to add or remove channels from the scan list. If user changes are enabled, use the following steps to change the scan list: 1. Slide Switch B (SCAN) and Switch C (PRI) down/off. 2. Select a channel to be added or removed from the scan list by turning the channel selector knob. If the channel is already on the scan list, SCN appears in the display. 3. Press the ENT key to add a channel to the scan list. A short beep sounds and SCN appears on the display. 4. Press the CLR key to remove a channel from the scan list. A short beep sounds and SCN disappears from the display. Scan Toggle Priority Toggle SCN appears when toggle is BACK/ON SCN disappears when toggle FRONT/OFF Section 305.002f Page 7 of 29 To add channels to scan you must first turn the Toggle off, then press ENT to add a channel and CLR to delete a channel, then turn toggle on to enable the scan function. Time-Out Timer The transmit time-out timer limits the duration of calls and guards against accidentally locking on the transmitter and tying up the radio system. The duration of the time-out timer is currently set at 90 seconds. If the length of the user message exceeds the preset time out of 90 seconds, the transmitter automatically shuts off and a tone sounds. To continue transmission, release the PTT switch, press the PTT switch again, and continue talking. Display Backlighting The Bendix King GPH CMD radio is programmed with a backlight display when a signal is received or when a key is pressed. The time duration of the backlighting can also be programmed. Group/Channel Labels The Bendix King GPH CMD radio can be programmed with a label for each of the 25 channel groups and a label for each of the 20 channels within each group. To display the channel/group number associated with a label: 1. Press the # key to display the group number. 2. Press the # key again to display the channel number. 3. Press and hold the # key to display the channel label Priority Scan Priority scan enables the radio to receive on any channel while monitoring for a message on the designated priority channel. The radio samples the priority channel at a preset rate (.25–2.0 seconds) regardless of activity on any other channel. Priority scan operates only while the radio is not transmitting and can be used in combination with scan operation. When Switch C (PRI) is up, the display shows SCN. If a message is received on the priority channel, the radio receiver locks onto the channel for the duration of the transmission. Section 305.002f Page 8 of 29 The following channels are recommended for a scan list: Assigned Command Channel Assigned Tactical Channel Assigned Air-to-Ground Channel Air Guard (if assigned to the incident) How To Add A Priority Channel •Turn off both scan switches (down) before doing the following: •Turn the Channel Selector knob to desired priority channel. •Press the [PRI] key.
