SECTION 303.002 FLUSHING PUMPS
PURPOSE
To provide an outline of how and when to flush Fresno Fire Department apparatus
pumps, plumbing, and tanks.
APPLICATION
Due to the accumulation of sand in the City of Fresno water mains, it is necessary that
extreme caution be taken to prevent sand from entering pumps, pump plumbing, and
water tanks.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
Apparatus suspected of having water tanks contaminated with sand or other impurities
which cannot be flushed, will be sent to Fire Fleet for inspection and cleaning.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Water tanks contaminated with Class A foam may be flushed by repeated filling and
draining until all traces of the contaminant are gone.
Valves and drains being flushed may be opened and closed several times to remove
trapped sand from the valve seats.
PROCESS
The pump should not be engaged for the following procedures.
1. Thoroughly flush the hydrant to be used.
2. Remove the 4-1/2-inch soft suction. Remove, inspect, and clean the
suction screen.
3. Remove the 2-1/2-inch soft-suction valve cap. Remove, inspect, and
clean the suction screen.

discharge gate.
5. Flush the 2-1/2-inch suction valve, the 2-1/2-inch suction drain, and
the main pump drains first.
6. Close the 2-1/2-inch suction valve to provide full flow from the
hydrant, flush the 4-1/2-inch front suction valve, 4-1/2-inch suction
valve drain, and piping.
7. Close the 4-1/2-inch suction valve and flush the 2-1/2-inch discharge
valves alternately to provide full flow from the hydrant.
8. Turret valves may be flushed or back flushed with proper care to
prevent damaging or clogging of the attached nozzle.
9. Operate all dump/tank drain valves and tank filler valves to remove
any trapped sand.
10. Return the valves and drains to normal operating positions, refill the
tank, and prime the pump.
