SECTION 109.009 DUTY OF ALL MEMBERS
DUTY OF ALL MEMBERS
Section 1
Familiarize themselves with and be obedient to the laws and ordinances of the City of
Fresno, the Standard Operating Procedures, the Administrative Manual, policies and
practices, and orders affecting the operation of the Department.
Section 2
Attend all fires or alarms to which they may be assigned, detailed or summoned, and
to exert their greatest energy and best ability to perform their full duty under any and
all circumstances.
Section 3
Keep themselves in readiness to perform their duty and not absent themselves from
duty, place, or assignment without specific permission of their superior officer.
Section 4
Immediately report to their superior officer the loss or finding of any Department
badge, identification card, book, or equipment.
Section 5
Exercise precautionary measures to avoid injury to themselves and others while in the
performance of duty.
Section 6
Exercise due caution to avoid unnecessary damage to or loss of City property.

Section 7
Be responsible for the safekeeping and proper care of all Department property in their
charge.
Section 8
Practice economy in the use of supplies and metered services and see that waste is
avoided.
Section 9
Accord obedience, respect, and courtesy to superior officers and those performing the
duties of a higher rank.
Section 10
Be courteous and respectful in their dealings with the public.
Section 11
Promptly notify the appropriate superior officer of any inability to report to duty at the
time required.
Section 12
Carry their identification cards while off duty and at other times when necessary for
identification purposes.
Section 13
When relieved from duty under charges, promptly surrender all Department property
to their commanding officer, who will retain such property pending disposition of the
case until otherwise instruction by a superior officer.
Section 14
Instruct those designated to act in their absence and satisfy themselves that their relief
person is capable of performing the assigned duties.

Section 15
When assigned to act in a higher rank, accept responsibility for the performance of
the duties of that position.
Section 16
Immediately report to their immediate superior officer any accident, sickness, or injury
occurring to themselves while on duty, no matter how trivial.
Section 17
Notify the Payroll Section and update the Department staffing program within 24 hours
of any change of residence or telephone number. Establishment of residency at a fire
station is prohibited.
Section 18
Keep their persons, uniforms, beds, and lockers in a neat and clean condition.
Persistence in uncleanliness or offensive habits will be just cause for disciplinary
action.
Section 19
Promptly notify their superior officer of all matters affecting the operations of the
Department.
Section 20
Promptly notify their superior officer and/or battalion chief of all matters they are
involved in, which may be a subject of major interest to the general public or media
(i.e., the arrest or conviction of a person) which may impact the individual’s ability to
successfully carrying out his/her professional responsibility.
Section 21
Participate in drills and other Department training activities as directed and perform
related work as required.

Accept and complete all assignments in a professional and efficient manner.
