SECTION 109.006 FIRE CAPTAINS
FIRE CAPTAINS
Section 1
Captains are the only officers whose command is at all times under their immediate
supervision and control. Consequently, their position is one of utmost importance in
the enforcement of discipline and the promotion and maintenance of efficiency.
Therefore, they will consider it their indispensable duty to be constantly vigilant and,
while setting an especially good example, require their commands measure up to the
standard of Departmental requirements.
Section 2
Will be in control of their respective stations and companies while on duty and will be
responsible for putting into effect the policies and practices of the Standard Operating
Procedures and Administrative Manual of the Department.
Section 3
Shall respond with their company to emergency calls as directed and, when first to
arrive, shall assume command until the arrival of a superior officer.
Section 4
Shall familiarize themselves with their districts and the general duties of their
respective commands to enable them to assume the responsibilities and efficiently
discharge the duties of company officers.
Section 5
Shall use good judgment in the performance of their duties, and at fires shall be
particularly judicious in laying lines, placing ladders, spotting equipment, calling for
assistance, and in other operations necessary to the preservation of life and property.

Section 6
Shall train and instruct the members of their companies by regularly conducting
schools and house drills to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of their
commands are maintained at a high standard.
Section 7
Shall not permit intoxicated or otherwise undesirable persons to remain in or about
the fire station at any time. Children will not be permitted in and around the fire station
unless accompanied by an adult.
Section 8
Shall make periodic inspections of buildings and special hazards as directed and keep
a comprehensible record thereof.
Section 9
Shall cause the assembly of their company personnel for line up no later than 0830
hours and at such other times as deemed necessary. Tardy and/or absent (past 0800
hours) member(s) shall be immediately reported to their superior officer.
Section 10
Line-ups shall apprise their command of all orders and Department communications
received since the previous shift and impart any additional information or instructions
deemed necessary for the operations of their companies.
Section 11
Will ensure all apparatus and Department equipment assigned to or stored in quarters
is properly cared for and protected.
Section 12
When a subordinate under their command commits an infraction of the Standard
Operating Procedures and/or Administrative Manual policies and practices, retraining,
station school, coaching and/or counseling may be used to address the infraction. A
written report will be forwarded through channels to the Fire Chief containing all details

of the issue. Such action on the part of the fire captain will not be preclude further
action by a superior officer, who, upon review of the case, may impose additional
corrective action as circumstances warrant.
Section 13
Will not permit members to go off duty until properly relieved or until other
arrangements have been authorized by their superior officer.
Section 14
Will not permit members of their company to leave the premises of company quarters
when on duty for a distance greater than one city block without permission of their
superior officer.
Section 15
Will keep the Communications Center informed of the whereabouts and movements
of themselves and their companies while on duty and out of quarters.
Section 16
Shall provide assistance to all medically trained personnel of the Department and
related private companies within the policy adopted by this Department and policies
adopted by higher government authority.
