SECTION 109.005 FIRE BATTALION CHIEFS
FIRE BATTALION CHIEFS
Section 1
Will be assigned, detailed, or transferred to such positions and perform such duties,
as may be directed, subject to and in such manner as provided by the Charter and
Ordinances of the City of Fresno.
Section 2
Shall rank in authority in accordance with their civil service classification, and in the
absence of a superior officer may be required to perform the duties and exercise the
authority incidental to the office.
Section 3
Shall ensure that all laws, ordinances, Standard Operating Procedures, Administrative
Manual policies and practices, orders, or directions for the government of the
Department are promptly and implicitly enforced and that all violations that are brought
to their attention are promptly investigated and reported, through channels, to the Fire
Chief.
Section 4
Shall direct and coordinate the application of established policies and practices of the
Standard Operating Procedures and the Administrative Manual. Will confer with their
fellow chief officers, coordinating their duties for the purpose of uniform government
of the Operations Division.
Section 5
Fire Battalion Chiefs assigned to a shift shall respond to alarms of fire and other
emergencies as assigned and assume command until the arrival of a superior officer.
Shall deploy apparatus and personnel in the most advantageous manner for the
control and extinguishment of fire and the preservation of life and property.

Section 6
Will make recommendations to the deputy chief for the transfer, detail, assignment, or
reassignment of personnel, apparatus, equipment, and appliances that in their opinion
would increase the efficiency of the Department.
Section 7
Will maintain records and develop reports as required.
Section 8
Shall hold the officers under their command strictly responsible and accountable for
the prompt and complete discharge of their duties and for the condition of personnel,
fire stations, apparatus, and equipment. Shall inspect Department personnel, fire
stations, equipment, and apparatus, as assigned by the deputy chief of the Operations
Division.
Section 9
Shall be guided in conducting their details and assignments by directive issued from
their superior officer or the Fire Chief’s office, outlining in detail the objectives to be
reached and the manner in which to proceed.
Section 10
Shall have power to summarily suspend from duty, for cause any officer or member
under his/her command, and report in writing such action to the Fire Chief
immediately.
