Unit Engine/Truck Company: List the unit of the missing firefighter, i.e.,
Engine 2 or Truck 1.
Name: Identify the missing firefighter by name.
Assignment (Search/Attack): Write the missing firefighter’s last known
assignment.
Radio Channel of Missing Firefighter: Identify the channel dedicated to the
missing firefighter.
Radio Channel Assignments:
Injured Firefighter: If communication with the missing or injured
firefighter is received, clear all other radio
traffic from the channel, i.e., the firefighter
calls emergency traffic “firefighter down” on
Fire 1. The injured firefighter, IC, and
dispatch should operate on that channel.
All other traffic should be moved so
transmissions from the “firefighter down”
are not obscured by other radio traffic.
Fire Ground Operations: Firefighting operations are moved to an
alternate channel. Depending on the size
of the fire, the firefighting operations could
be moved to an alternate command
channel (Fire 3) or one (1) of the TAC
channels.
RIC: RIC operations are to be moved to a TAC
channel. RIC members can listen to the
injured firefighter by placing their radios in
the monitor position.
Resources:
Escalate to Next Alarm: Call a full additional alarm as soon as a
(2nd Alarm, 3rd Alarm) firefighter is listed as lost or injured in the
interior of a structure.
Request Urban Search and Rescue: Call for USAR members and equipment.
(USAR)

Additional EMS: Request an additional EMS unit for
assignment to the RIC incident.
RIC Group Assignments:
Assign RIC Group Supervisor: The RIC group supervisor position should
be held by a company officer or a battalion
chief. Air warnings and exit orders should
be delivered by the RIC group supervisor.
Assign Two Additional Crews to RIC: Assign at least one (1) engine and one (1)
truck in addition to the RIC. RICs require a
minimum of four (4) personnel. Extrication
will require an average of 12 members.
Control Entrances (Assign to RIC): An officer is assigned to each entry/exit
portal. This provides accountability and
control of the entrance so additional crews
are not lost inside the structure.
RIC Air Tracking Sheet:
Use this sheet to track the movement of companies assigned to RIC. Multiple
companies may be assigned as a RIC. For example, Engine 13 and Truck 9 can be
combined to form RIC 1. Entry point and time should be noted on this form. Due to
air consumption requirements, close tracking of air usage is a vital necessity.
Provide an air warning and request a Personnel Accountability Report PAR every
five minutes. Sample broadcast would state, “RIC 1 you have been in for five (5)
minutes, confirm PAR.” The proper reply would consist of “RIC 1 copy five minutes,
all three members accounted for.” At the 15-minute mark issue an exit order.
