APPLICATION This policy applies to all fire alarm systems within the City of Fresno and contract service areas. These requirements apply to both required and voluntary systems. OPERATIONAL POLICY This section intentionally left blank. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE Based upon the need for uniformity in application across the Department’s diverse service delivery area, and after careful deliberation, the Department has determined the following: 1. When emergency repairs are made to any fire alarm system, it is the responsibility of the servicing contractor to consult the Department prior to (or immediately thereafter) completing any alterations in accordance with the currently adopted version of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code. 2. In most cases, repairs will require a full fire alarm permit package be submitted to the Department. However, other smaller repairs or alterations (i.e., those defined in Fire Prevention Manual, Sections Effective Date: October 2013 Justin Beal, Fire Prevention Engineer Current Revision Date: 7/28/2023 Section 407.010 Next Revision (3) Date: 7/28/2026 Page 2 of 2 407.008 and 407.009) may require a significantly smaller permit package. 3. In every case where it is practical, the Department is to be consulted prior to an alteration or modification to a fire alarm system. Complete documentation must also be provided in accordance with NFPA 72, the currently adopted version of the California Fire Code (CFC), and any local requirements. PROCESS This section intentionally left blank. INFORMATION As noted in the currently adopted version of NFPA 72, the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) is to be notified prior to the installation or alteration of equipment or wiring of a fire alarm system. This standard does not make an exception for “repair” work; however, the Department understands that emergency repairs are required from time to time for various reasons. In every case, when a fire alarm system has been altered from its original, approved configuration the requirements noted above apply. DEFINITIONS This section intentionally left blank.
