SECTION 405.031 MECHANICAL TEES & OUTLETS
PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to clarify the Fresno Fire Department’s (FFD or
Department) requirements related to the installation of mechanical tees, outlets or
other similar fittings in automatic fire sprinkler systems.
APPLICATION
This policy applies to all buildings equipped with an automatic fire sprinkler system
within the Department’s service area, including contract service areas. These
requirements apply to both required and voluntary automatic fire sprinkler systems.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
Based upon the need for uniformity in application across the Department’s diverse
service delivery area, and after careful deliberation, the Department has determined
the following:
1. Mechanical tees, outlets or similar fittings installed within any automatic fire
sprinkler system are required to have the “coupon” or “token” removed and
affixed to the outlet or piping in a permanent and durable manner, within six (6)
inches of the tee, outlet or similar fitting.
2. The use of plastic cable ties, tape in any form, and similar methods to secure
the “coupon” are not considered permanent and as such, are prohibited.
Exception: Plastic cable ties which are listed to UL 21S
3. Where metallic wire is used to secure the coupon, the wire must be 18 AWG or
larger, and there must be at least six (6) turns per inch of wire.
