SECTION 405.015 POWER SUPPLY CONNECTION FOR ELECTRIC SPRINKLER
ALARM BELLS
PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to clarify the Fresno Fire Department’s (FFD or
Department) requirements related to required, dedicated power supplies for
electrically powered, automatic fire sprinkler system alarm bells.
APPLICATION
This policy applies to all automatic fire sprinkler systems utilizing an electrically
powered alarm bell, within the City of Fresno (COF) and contract service areas and
includes both required and voluntary systems.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
Based upon the need for uniformity in application across the Department’s diverse
service delivery area, and after careful deliberation, the Department has determined
that all, electrically powered, automatic fire sprinkler system alarm bells shall conform
to all of the following requirements:
1. The power supply for all electrically powered automatic fire sprinkler
system alarm bells shall be provided from a dedicated branch circuit. No
other equipment is permitted to be installed on the branch circuit, except
as noted below.
2. The automatic fire sprinkler system alarm bell’s dedicated branch circuit
must be connected after the main service disconnect for the location.
3. For multi-meter electrical panels, the automatic fire sprinkler system
alarm bell’s dedicated branch circuit must be on the “house” main
electrical panel.
4. The dedicated branch circuit supplying power to the automatic fire
sprinkler system alarm bell must be equipped with a red colored, circuit
breaker lock out device, and it must be in the locked position. The circuit
must be labeled “Fire Sprinkler Bell” in a method and manner in
conformance with the currently adopted California Electrical Code
(CEC).

5. If the building is equipped with an approved, emergency or standby
power system, the dedicated branch circuit for the automatic fire
sprinkler system alarm bell must be connected to, and receive
secondary power from, the standby power source.
When a dedicated function fire alarm system (DFFAS) for automatic fire sprinkler
system monitoring is installed, the automatic fire sprinkler system alarm bell and the
DFFAS must be located on the same dedicated branch circuit.
